Grotesque murders committed based on the Seven Deadly Sins. Brad Pitt's rocket movie shot to fame.

As far as thrillers are concerned this is one of the best well-written and cerebral kinds. Although one gets to see the killer for only a short time, one still gets a depp impression of him throughout the film. John Due left an everlasting impact on me. Spacey has shown once agai...( read more)n how clever and powerful his acting skills are. Due is certainly one of the best examples of serial killers in Hollywood and it's the ending that made him a 'legend'.

One of the best serial killer thrillers.. David Fincher at his best.
  • March 22, 2009
This is without a doubt one of my favourite films of all time. Brilliant performances from both Freeman and Pitt's portrayal of a rocky relationship of master and apprentice, as their very different lives become intertwinned as the film progresses. An emotional roller coaster o...( read more)f a film based on the 7 deadly sins with underlying theme of the love a man can share with a woman and the pain human beings can cause to one another. With a supporting role from Gywneth Paltrow as Pitt's wife, and a chilling performance from Kevin Spacey, not to mention a truly devastating finale, this film is definitely one for the collection.

A perfect detective thriller. The actors do a top notch job, the script is great and Fincher creates a mood so thick you could cut it with a knife.

An early Fincher film, and an amazing use of the seven deadly sins in regards to the plot. Nothing is ever predictable or too unbelievable, but still maintains originality and authenticity, all down to the very end.

Too bloody and desperate for me...but I do understand the innovation and beauty that everyone sees on this film, I simply don't find it attractive.

Great movie. Didn't see it until recently, but glad I did.
  • March 7, 2009
Unique serial killer using the seven deadly sins to determine his victims. The ending just blew me away. I loved how the music and visuals set the mood from the start. Dark and somber to downright horrorific. Some scenes are definitely not for the fainthearted.

"Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? The creepiest, most insidious and clinically brilliant thriller ever made -- and that INCLUDES Hitchcock. A 360 degree vision of modern urban hell -- capped by the scariest serial killer you ever did see -- which paints a disturbingly true picture of the world we live in. (The f...( read more)inal statement, followed by the fade to black, chills me to the bone every time.) In fact, with its fundamentalist killer going to painstaking, performance art-like extremes to make his message known, it's arguable that the film thematically resonates more powerfully today than it did in 1995. A stunning, fearsome, airtight work with a lot to say.

Having moved to one of the most crime-filled cities in America, the young and headstrong Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) is partnered with the older and more cynical Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who is just one week away from retirement. Together they come across a serial kil...( read more)ler whose murders are based on the seven deadly sins.

To cut right to the chase, Se7en is a superb slice of cinema. With a cast all on top form, a script from Andrew Kevin Walker which should be considered a seminal piece of writing and an ending that takes your already-battered emotions and finishes them off, David Fincher?s masterpiece has both style and substance.

In terms of the style, one of the first things you notice is the intensely bleak atmosphere. Aiming to fill the audience with a sense of creepiness and forboding (a task he achieves in spades), Fincher mostly films in dark and dimly lit areas while the relentlessly-raining unnamed-city is realistically drawn as a decaying and gloomy place, where violence and corruption are par for the polluted course. Only showing us the disturbing aftermaths of the killings and not the deeds themselves (how very Manhunter), Fincher lets our imaginations do the work for us.

As for the substance, there?s much more here than just a gruesome crime thriller. Though many will just pigeon-hole it as a ?let?s find the bad guy? cop flick (It?s actually more about what he will do next and if they will catch him at all), Se7en revolves around the nature of humanity and how people view the world the live in. As beautifully reflected by polar opposites Mills and Somerset (their ?you can?t afford to be this naïve? bar chat is key), it takes its time to look at the ills of modern life, the effects they have and how society reacts to the evils all around. Most will probably think that force-feeding someone spaghetti till they burst is a tad too far but John Doe gets his point across.

Giving a lesson in restraint and subtlety, Morgan Freeman cements his position as one of the greatest actors of this ? or any other for that matter ? generation. Playing opposite, the perma hair-flattening Brad Pitt does a nice line in comic timing and gives the optimistic spark the movie needs, Gwyneth Paltrow lends emotional weight despite being underused and Kevin Spacey makes a massive impact way beyond his screen time. Elsewhere there?s support from Richard Roundtree, R Lee Ermey and John C McGinley. Guess when you?re up against a killer of this calibre you need Shaft, the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket and, er, Dr Cox from Scrubs (well he is pretty mean).

Though Andrew Kevin Walker self-depricatingly joked that his script would result in a ?pretentious slasher movie?, Se7en is cinema at its best and an undoubted modern classic.

Quite, quite brilliant, this is one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. I can't watch the now famous ending without getting goosebumps, and that, ladies and gents, is a sign of good filmmaking.

Stylish and atmospheric, this is one of David Fincher's best movies. He's been hit and miss for me over the years (I loved "Zodiac," liked "Panic Room" a lot, appreciated "Benjamin Button," was whatever about "Fight Club," and I just plain wanted to drop a dookie on "Alien 3").

One might say that "Seven" is his defining work, and I wouldn't argue. It's intelligent, thought-provoking, and suspenseful. It's too bad that the ending is so famous that I inevitably heard the spoiler a few times since its release, but it was nevertheless an exciting film with a couple solid performances by Pitt and Freeman.
  • February 27, 2009
Without a doubt the most original movie to come out of hollywood in years, this film tells the story of a killer named John Doe who targets people who commit the seven deadly sins.
  • February 25, 2009
Extremely well written thriller, with a great cast. I've always admired director David Fincher's movies, none more so than Seven. Good movie...
A stand out film dealing with a particularly unpleasant Serial Killer, "Se7en" (along with "Silence of the Lambs"), is something of a milestone in this genre. An intelligent script, and admirable actors including the excellent Morgan...( read more) Freeman, Prad Pitt, Gwenth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey, with a cinema noir style, and very grisly murders representing the Seven Deadly Sins. It is the performances however that lifts this movie above the average, Morgan Freeman as the older world wise detective, Pitt almost manic as his young enthusiastic sidekick, Poltrow plays the wife with a fine degree of sensitivity, and Spacey does his usual brilliant psycho routine. There is a pivotal scene with Freeman and Paltrow in a café which shows the depth of performances here. They are believable characters in a dark disturbing world wherein it always seems to be raining. An effective thriller with tight direction and atmospheric photography.
    I enjoyed that.
