Tom Huddlestone, Time Out
Little has changed since the heyday of John Hughes: nerdy hero on a mission to get laid, red sports car, bespectacled BFF- check, check, check.
-
Ruth Hessey, MovieTime, ABC Radio National
Why in the world is this essentially sweet tale of two super shy teenagers who fall in love dressed up in utterly profane fancy dress?
-
Reyhan Harmanci, San Francisco Chronicle
Some jokes work, some don't and, frankly, I can't remember either, but it leaves a sweet aftertaste. Slight, but sweet.
-
Tom Keogh, Seattle Times
Above all, Marsden and Green are a genuine delight.
-
Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer
The comedy is uniformly crude and lewd, some of it works and some of it's lame.
-
Peter Howell, Toronto Star
There should be some kind of law that if you're going to make an incredibly derivative, violent and vulgar teen comedy then it must also be funny.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
Sure in essence it's formula and pretty much just a romantic comedy, but [the film] is a sex fueled hilarious teen comedy/road flick...
-
Matt Soergel, Florida Times-Union
It has its rewards, most notably a likable trio of teen characters - and a couple of wild-card sidekicks - who are given room to carve out personalities of their own.
-
Bill Gibron, DVDTalk.com
Sex Drive is just awful. It's also inspired. It's perhaps the worst teen comedy ever created. It's also an unapologetically broad and insular work.
-
Peter Canavese, Groucho Reviews
Likeable enough, and even amusing for stretches, but ultimately too generic for a recommendation. [Blu-ray]
-
Prairie Miller, NewsBlaze
A libidinous road movie with outlandish auto-erotic components in more ways than one, Sex Drive is evidently engaged in a grossing contest with other more dirty talk than action raging hormone romps.
-
Sam Toy, Empire Magazine
Okay, it doesn't have an original bone in its body, but forgetting the awful title, Sex Drive has its share of snappy lines and decent gags. It's also got Seth Green and James Marsden on cracking form, which should never be underestimated.
-
Daniel Etherington, Film4
Although the Hughes tone in the first half slowly gives way to more predictable frattish comedy, alongside Superbad Sex Drive is one of the funniest American high school comedies in ages.
-
Wendy Ide, Times [UK]
It's crushingly generic stuff - a combination of gross-out gags and clammy sentiment - but Seth Green's cameo as a sardonic Amish car mechanic has its moments.
-
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK]
Duke has good scenes as Lance, but this is a rental, rather than a go-see.
-
Tim Evans, Sky Movies
It's a keenly enjoyable celebration of teenage insecurity and - for hairy-handed teenage hordes - offers the first chance to see Amish breasts since Harrison Ford clocked Kelly McGillis in in Witness.
-
, Total Film
Think of it as American Pie for a post-Apatow world: crude, yes, but with its heart exactly where it should be.
-
Christopher Tookey, Daily Mail [UK]
Too many of the gags aren't funny, the tone is depressingly sexist, and the characters won't make sense - even to teenagers.
-
David Edwards, Daily Mirror [UK]
It's as crude, tasteless and offensive as all the above suggests, although it comes with a smattering of medium-sized laughs, making it a trip just about worth taking if you're a hormone-pumped adolescent.

First of all, this film is awful. You know it's going to be awful before you start watching but watch I did anyway, and yes, it's awful. But, it's not as awful as it first appears. I liked the Doughnut suit scenes, I liked Clark Duke's Lance, I liked Andy & randy and there are a couple of very funny lines throughout the film. It's a horrible name, it's nasty to the point I wanted to gag in places and it's cliched from head to toe. Why do all these films have to have an Amish scene, I know they turned it on its head here but it's still the unnecessary and unfunny Amish scene. In conclusion, it's the better kind of awful.

I didn't hate this movie. I mean, Seth Green (mostly) pulls off a delightfully passive-aggressive Amish; James Marsden, a decidedly homophobic douche bag; and Clark Duke, possibly the funniest character in the film, if one of the least believable (but I wouldn't necessarily blame that on him so much as the casting). The others are mostly passable except, say, Katrina Bowden's god-awful Southern accent (though Southern accents tend to be botched anyhow).
Don't expect a memorable or, really, interesting plot, but expect a few laughs, maybe even some laugh-out-loud moments, not necessarily memorable laughs. It could've been better but if it'd tried any harder, it probably would've fallen apart. Then again, that's the nature of formulaic films, comedic or otherwise.

Funniest scene? James Marsden destroying a garage door with his fist and head. I think smart people will realize this movie, in fact, does suck when they see a drunk amish girl run out of a barn screaming "Rum springer" and then falling (not drunk falling, just plunging downward into the ground) into cow shit, or shit from whatever animal amish people own. But im even smarter than most smart people so i knew it was gonna suck when i heard it was called "Sex Drive".

Okay, so I watched the unrated version even though there was a disclaimer to watch the theatrical release first. I guess I should have listened to the disclaimer... Might have been better that way. It was alright but not funny and/or cute enough for me to watch again.

Your basic run of the mill teen sex comedy. It's not very good and there are very few laughs. It's very predictable as well.
Seth Green brings the only laughs in the whole movie.

OK, yes I know its another teenage movie, but what sets this one apart from most of those other teenage flicks is this one is actually funny. The best raunchy/road trip movie I have seen in quite some time. A lot of laugh out loud moments. It will make you cringe, laugh, and might even offend you. Which is all better in these kinds of films. Couldn't believe some of the stuff they did in this film. I had the pleasure of seeing the theatrical version and the un-rated version. Both are hilarious, but the unrated version is a bit funnier although I could have done without all the unnecessary naked chicks and dudes who just happen to walk across the scene. Anyways, it was fun and silly and I totally enjoyed watching this film. Loads of laughs.

I loved every minute of this movie!! If you are looking for a non-stop constantly-falling-out-of-your-seat film, then Sex Drive is perfect for you. It is an instant teen comedy classic, in my books. James Mardsen and Seth Green steals the show but up and coming actors: Josh Zuckerman and Clark Duke did extremely well for themselves and prove themselves to be the next big thing in the future. It is just about as funny than Superbad and American Pie (1,2,3) and the plot of the movie was just so simple and well-made. Hopefully, Sex Drive will be a teen classic in the next few years because it's extremely funny, raunchy & has a little bit of it's sweet side, too. Sex Drive is awesome and super hilarious!!!

I walked into this movie thinking it was just going to be another bad comedy, but it wasn't, and I'm calling it the Superbad of 2008!

Inane supposed comedy, crass and tasteless. What is James Marsden doing in this junk?

However it comes across as a fun film that the cast enjoyed making. The unrated version of the film is quite odd to, as the director will tell you! Not quite up there with American Pie, Euro Trip etc but it should still cause quite a few laughs. That sure is an awesome car to!

However, bumped the rating up half a star for the R-rated DVD version that has random fully nude females randomly placed throughout the film. Not too bad, but I still can't recommend the film to anyone over 18 years old.

A splendid and wonderful cast that add heart to this film. Amanda Crew, Josh Zuckerman and Clark Duke are wonderful togehter brining on very funny and compelling chemistry. Seth Green is hysterical. James Marsden is flat-out brilliant, stealing the show with outragiously funny performance. A wild and incrediabley fun comedy ride that you will love from the start to finish.

- What? He's gonna what? With what?"
I'm not a huge fan of these type of movies, I'll admit I've had my share of 'em but after watching 'Sex Drive', I have to say that this is one of the better US teen sex comedies I've seen. Pretty much puts the 'American Pie' series to shame. 'Road Trip' from 2000 stands along with this one as the best of 'em all. 'Sex Drive' just puts on an extra gear..
The story isn't the real deal here. Just another late teen who still hasn't got a taste of the sweet stuff. So he has found a hot chick via the World Wide Web, or what's it called, and is off to get it on!
What I really liked about the film was Seth Green as the sarcastic amish guy. He totally steals the show and delivers the best laughs. I'm not that familiar with his filmography, only remember him from the 'Austin Powers' series but if he truly is this funny in his other films, I just might check 'em out.
Another nice surprise was James Marsden as the older brother to the lead character. I actually didn't recognize him at all at first. He gives a different performance then what I'm used to. Cyclops from 'X-Men', the prince from 'Enchanted'. Now this. A bit on overdrive but still manages to be funny.
The rest of the cast works well also. Clark Duke might be the next Jonah Hill if he does the right career choices, we'll see. But you have to be warned. 'Sex Drive' will probably give tons of laughs at the first viewing but will it stand for another one? Probably not but, as said, will give you a nice 2 hour of simple entertainment.

Just about as raunchy as a comedy like this can possibly get. It's 'American Pie' with the brakes off . Above all, Marsden and Green are a genuine delight to watch

The name "Sex Drive" may awake false expectations for some viewers prior to watching. The movies goes beyond the typical "american-pie-like-comedy-style" and shows a sensitive development of relationships which were not expected at the beginning. These developments are combined with several road-trip experiences and different (of course, also sexual) experiences during the trip. But the film contains more than that, it has a nice plot, a stringent story and very talented young actors. It is definitely not just a teenage-flick, it is much more.
Because despite some laughs, funny moments ( "amish") and unexpected action - we experience beautiful acting of Amanda Crew who didn't appear to me that intense in other movies before (like Final Destination for example). She does not only look beautiful but acts in a very authentic way, it seems to me like she enjoyed the set, the whole idea of the movie, and the acting in it especially (though the film had its rather crude moments at the beginning and in the step-mother appearances).
I admit that this was one of the best teenage comedies I've seen in the last decade. Not only because it shows the lifestyle everybody would have loved to live in its teenage years, it also features both laughs and unexpected developments in the end, thoughts about the meaning of love and how important it is to trust feelings.
A closer look at the character of Ian would have been great because during the whole movie he seemed a bit inapproachable, and we don't get an impression about his development of feelings towards Felicia, only the other way round.
To sum up, Funny movie with a very nice development in the end, and a fascinating and breath-taking Amanda Crew - worth watching
