Sexy Beast Reviews and Ratings

?FAN DABI ? DOBI ? TASTIC!? mutters Gary (Ray Winston), baking in the Spanish mid-day sun - a British ex ?con, who has served his time and now resigned to peaceful retirement in the Costa Del Crime, with ex porn star wife Amanda Redman.

However one realises this domestic id...( read more)yll is not going to continue when a giant boulder comes plummeting down the hillside (Raiders of the Lost Ark style) into Gary?s pool. The Utopia smashed, worse things are to come for Gary, with a phone call from old gang leader Don Logan, played by Ben Kingsley. Any serenity Kingsley used for his Ghandhi role has been used up, and he plays an unhinged psychotic on a par with Dennis Hopper?s Frank Booth ? bringing danger, chaos and unease where he goes.

Glazer makes a nod to Takeshi Kitano?s style of balancing this forboding with surreal and almost slapstick comedic moments

    ?What?s that??

    ?A goat!?

Worth watching alone, to see TVs Lovejoy (Ian McShane playing Teddy) being rooted by James Fox in an orgy scene. The action then switches to England for one last job where the net and tension around Gary?s Sexy Beast gets ever tighter, bringing a sense of tension universally lacking in the rest of the British Modern Gangster genre. As Glazer?s first feature, things look very promising for this excellent British director.

    "Fan-dabby-dozy-tastic"

An extremely entertaining and strange film that I will probably watch over and over. LOL "Don" (Ben Kingsley) tries to coerce "Gal" (Ray Winstone) out of gangster retirement for one last job.

Ben's performance is stunning and Ray holds hi...( read more)s own. Loved Ray's opening scenes by the pool in the yellow speedos!

"Bloody hell. I'm sweating in here. Roasting. Boiling. Baking. Sweltering. It's like a sauna. Furnace. You can fry an egg on my stomach."

Sexy Beast was a normal gangster movie, although there was not much shooting involved. It was a very slow paced movie. Too damn slow...( read more).
The story was about a retired British gangster named Gal, who decided to live a normal life with his wife in Spain and had no intention coming back . His former boss played by Ben Kingsley wants him to do another job that will lead to dramatic endings. The director had put too many importance in the emotions and relationships, which made the movie so boring. I expected more shootings and actions. The movie was only 90 minutes,.but I felt like I had spent 2 hours watching.

If you like strange movies, this one is just awsome. Ben Kingsley is an evil bastard when he wants to be. Some Americans may have a hard time with the accents but this is by far one of the best British films.

A gripping, wild and explosive crime thriller. It's terifficlyy funny and wildly entertaining. It's powerful and stunning with plenty of style to burn. Ben Kingsley is electrifying, one of his best performances of his career. Definately one of the most memorable gangster characte...( read more)rs since Scarface. Kingsley is live, snaping, sparking live wire. Ray Winestone is terrific. Ian McShane is marvelous. A classic. Bone-chilling and thrilling. A brilliant film. This is a movie that you cant turn away from. A masterpiece. It's dark, funny, wicked and refreshingly entertaining.

Stylish crime drama that is colourful, athentic and a Oscar worthy performance from Ben Kingsley.

Why can?t anyone rip Tarentino off correctly? No one ever correctly steals his energy, his penchant for creative references, his structural fearlessness, or even his dialogue (at least not beyond his liberal use of the work ?fuck?). No. All anyone ever tries to steal is his st...( read more)ylized and unrealistic version of organized crime. And while this isn?t as laughable as the work of Guy Richie, it?s still a rather obnoxious movie in which a bunch of Cockneys yell at each other for extended periods in the service of a pointless movie that sometimes goes out of its way to tell its story inefficiently. Yes, Ben Kingsley does give a pretty good performance here, but his work is wasted on a silly character in a silly movie.

Fun gangster flick. Gaz thinks he has retired until his former boss comes in to strong-arm him out of retirement (Ben Kingsley as a particularly nasty piece, he really steals the movie). Fun. WATCH ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CREDITS OR YOU'LL MISS THE BIT AT THE END!

    Ben Kingsley steal the show.

  • April 17, 2009
A superb performance by Ben Kingsley who had the accent and style of talk down to an absolute ?T?. The film itself and storyline seemed to lack something I can?t quite put my finger on. Less convincing to British viewers was the idea of Ian McShane, aka Lovejoy as the top guy. ...( read more)

Ben Kingsley?s performance is definitely the biggest contribution to the amount of stars but just have to mention how great Amanda Redman looked in this, especially as a Brunette.
  • April 5, 2009
A great crime drama highlighted by Ben Kingsley's darkly amusing scene-stealer of a performance. Winstone and mcShane are great also.
  • April 4, 2009
Sexy beast, and Kingsley is the main point on the poster....my decision is made aha
  • March 23, 2009
Clever reinvention of the mobster movie with one of Kingsley's most memorable performances.
  • March 8, 2009
    nice little dark crime comedy.
  • March 7, 2009
Sometimes hard to watch, that's a good thing in this case. Winstone, Kengsley and McShane -- wow!
  • February 15, 2009
Curious heist movie, centered on the characters and not the heist itself. Verbose and over-the-top, but Kingsley's performance and the interesting angle of the flick makes this an interesting movie.

Sexy Beast is a funny and highly enjoyable crime movie punctuated by some blood curdling violence. The film was directed by Jonathen Glazer, who was responsible for most of the recent amazing Guinness beer adverts.

Ray Winstone is Gal, a retired criminal enjoying retirement in...( read more) Spain with friends and the woman he loves. But this is shattered by the arrival of a menacing figure from his past in the shape of pyschotic Don Logan (played with evil intensity by Ben Kingsley). Don wants Gal for one last spectacular job and will do just about anything to get him, including threatening Gal's beloved wife.

The story is told at a fast pace, with several surreal interludes but never loses momentum. Ray Winstone puts in another loveable badboy performance that he does so well, but the film is dominated by Kingsley who steals every scene he is in and creates one of the most menacing screen villains in recent memory. The brilliance of the film is that it manages to combine so many disparate elements (thriller, comedy, and a touching love story to say the least) into a cohesive and highly entertaining whole. A real pleasure to watch and a striking, brilliant debut.

Powerful psychological thriller straight out of Greek myth. Ben Kingsley is mesmerizing as the fury descending on hapless mortals, rigid, twitchy, and coiled.

Probably the weirdest gangster film that I have seen in a while, well, If the western genre got "El Topo", the crime genre certainly have "Sexy Beast". Ben Kingsley is a revelation on this film, playing a very dark character despite of its caricature-like personality. The ambiguo...( read more)us scenes involving the "hairy beast" is very weird, one would wonder why these sequences exist on such a straightforward film, but it did, and proud of it. The violence in this film is very brief, but very grim, kind of like the bloody scene in "Donnie Brasco", a very short one, but one that you will never forget. "Sexy Beast" is not a realistic gangster picture, not because of its surrealistic moments, but because of the operatic performances by the actors, which sometimes make the film unintentionally funny. The ending was very ambiguous, like a metaphor of the protagonist's inner demons, and how he was afraid of Don Logan(Ben Kingsley). All in all, "Sexy Beast" defied crime film conventions, but gone a little bit over the top and never came back down, but despite of this flaw, this film is a very unique crossover of a heist film, gangster film, and comedy film, and if you mix the three, you have "Sexy Beast", a confusing, but entertaining ride into a darkly humorous, complicated world of a desperate villain.

Interesting crime piece. Not so interesting for the plot, but the casting and general age probably were not 'demographic friendly'. Good for them! Role that redefines what you might think of Ben Kingsly.

I've seen this at least six times, and I can say without any hesitation whatsoever that it's at or very near the top of my list of 'coolest movies ever made'. To begin with, one of the main characters is a guy named Gal, which gives you an indication that anything is about to go....( read more) And it does. Ray Winstone plays Gary 'Gal' Dove, a retired British gangster now living the good life in sunny Spain, and the opening scene where he's poolside baking in the sun as The Stranglers' song Peaches blasts from the soundtrack gives a good indication of the fun that's in store. His voice-over, in full Cockney accent, will bring a dumb smile to your face that will remain plastered there for the rest of the movie, if you're anything like me. Shortly thereafter, Gal comes heart-stoppingly close to being obliterated by a falling boulder the size of a small planet, which lands splashingly at the bottom of the pool. A foreshadowing of things to come? I won't spill the beans here. You'll just have to see for yourself. Not long after that life-threatening event, the sweet life of Gal and his wife Deedee (Amanda Redman) is interrupted by a visit from Gal's old associate Don Logan (Ben Kingsley, in mad dog mode (should've gotten the Oscar, but the Academy blew it by giving it to Jim Broadbent for Iris)). Kingsley should've sent Don Logan to piss on their bathroom carpets. But, never mind. Logan is on a mission from head gangster Teddy Bass (a never more terrifying Ian McShane) to recruit Gal for a bank job back in England, and he's not the kind of guy who takes no for an answer. But that's exactly the answer Gal tries to give him, leading to some hilarious interplay between the two men, with Gal in serious fear for his life, but refusing to give an inch, and Logan using every threat he has at his disposal, spoken and unspoken, to try to convince him otherwise. [Example - Gal: I'm going to have to turn this opportunity down.
Don: No, you're going to have to turn this opportunity YES!] You can probably guess that Gal does end up doing the job, but in the meantime Don Logan has mysteriously disappeared, much to the consternation of Teddy Bass, who suspects Gal of some unnamed foul play. The scenes between Winstone and McShane are nail-bitingly tense, as Bass tries to use the sheer force of his personality to break down Gal's defences, while Gal tries to project innocence and calm, while sweating bullets and trying to keep from cracking under the pressure. McShane has one of the best lines in the movie in a conversation with Harry (James Fox), the inside man on the bank job. [Teddy: What are you staring at? Harry: The back of your head. Teddy: Well, don't. Stare at the back of your own fucking head.] McShane's dry delivery kills me every single time. And another classic, when Bass is asked by his right-hand man if he thinks the bank job is 'do-able', he replies, "Where there's a will - and there is a fucking will - there's a way - and there is a fucking way." Kudos to first-time screenwriters Louis Mellis and David Scinto, who never set a foot wrong. Just check out Don Logan's extended monologue in the scene where he's being thrown off the plane for refusing to put out his cigarette, during which he accuses one of the stewards of inappropriately touching his 'front bottom'. Absolutely brilliant, and brilliantly delivered by Kingsley, with a feigned innocence that has to be seen to be believed. We know what Logan is like, and to see him play the sexual victim of an airline steward that he could no doubt eat for lunch on a bad day is just too delicious to be described. I almost neglected to mention the demonic machine-gun toting rabbit-like creature that keeps appearing in Gal's dreams. I know what you're thinking, that it's shades of Donnie Darko, but Beast was released in 2000 and Darko in 2001, so no more needs to be said about that. I think the movie could've done without that particular invention, but it does add a certain amount of fun to the proceedings, and when the writing is this good, we can forgive an indulgence or two. Last but not least, a huge amount of credit has to go to director Jonathan Glazer, who achieved brilliance here, in his feature film debut, and followed it up with the intriguing Birth in 2004. He may never come close to topping Sexy Beast, but I for one will be watching closely to see if he has the balls to try.

I saw it because of the academy nomination. A cruel and disinterested tale lead by a guy proving he is no long Ghandi. So much for an eye for an eye making the world blind...
