This is my all-time favorite Shakespeare, and this particular production is a good example of why Nicol Williamson will never make my favorite actor list. To make Macbeth mediocre, at its "best" moments, you really have to be trying hard. If you want to see a great rece...( read more)nt adaptation of the play, be sure to check out Scotland, PA. James Le Gros, Christopher Walken, and especially Maura Tierny as Lady Macbeth, are excellent.

This is an interesting rendition of The Scottish Play.

Not a lot of people know that it is unlucky to say the name Macbeth outside a performance because since it is supposedly the least costly to stage in terms of props and so on, it could be demonstrable of a theatre on the sli...( read more)de into financial ruin. And yet this production was relatively lavish in its set and costume, compared with other films amongst its BBC Shakespeare run bedfellows.

But the set could well have been a series of unpainted cardboard boxes and it would still have worked - driven purely by the acting. Nicol Williamson's Macbeth was a phenomenal rendition, as he went from genial to doubtful introspective to manic in a way other actors would have a genuine nervous breakdown over, without the need to act one. And, given that objects such as the dagger ("is this a dagger that I see before me?") and Banquo's ghost were caused to be imaginary by the director, a lesser actor would certainly have been as transparent as they, being absent, were.

Jane Lapotaire acquitted the shrewish, scheming Lady Macbeth with aplomb and somewhat more sexuality than the Beeb is necessarily used to, and her own descent into despair and, ultimately, death, was as skilfully done as one would expect of such a production.

As for the rest, they shone slightly less than did the main protagonists foregoing, but instead added to the whole somewhat as roof supports hold against the main spine.

And so, a masterful production of a powerful play.
