Burt Reynolds is smooth and smart-alecky Brooklyn private detective Shamus McCoy in Buzz Kulik's jokey attempt to update Howard Hawk's The Big Sleep to a 1970s sensibility. The case McCoy becomes involved in concerns the steely multi-millionaire E. J. Hume (Ronald Weyland), who hires McCoy to find some stolen diamonds.
