The unscrupulous militarist known as the "hero of the Six-Day War" was never considered a friend of the Palestinians, and as the Israeli Minister of Defense he was held directly responsible for Christian Lebanese Falange militia attacks on Palestinian refuge camps back in 1982. Later, when Sharon took control of the government, he continued calls for establishment of illegal Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories. So what happened in 2003 that caused the lifelong Israeli military man and politician to suddenly soften his rhetoric?
