Maggie Gyllenhaal is brilliant in this disturbing but moving drama. It?s not going to be every ones cuppa tea and its quite uncomfortable to watch at times but it?s a bold and exceptional portrait of a woman who is both innocent and guilty and her struggle to right past wrongs. I...( read more) found the content to be handled extremely well by Collyer, never siding with any character as such and letting the viewers decide who is right/wrong and to blame and how although it may seem people can be cruel, sometimes it?s because they care.

maggie gyllenhaal doing the best acting in any film she's been in. she plays someone with alot of hope that's also very destructive. the situations she finds herself in are very human ones... it's a bizarre film about an ex addict/alcoholic trying to get clean

Most of the praise for this film should rest with Gyllenhaal who produces a fabulously destructive yet naive character. A number of key sequences as well as the title suggest Sherry is the child in this film. She gets far more excitement buying toys for her daughter than her daug...( read more)hter has with them. The direction is also mature enough to not label Sherry as either a complete waste of space or a victim. She's a broken woman who honestly wants to make a change but can't quite figure out how. The film offers up some darker instances that aren't fully explored, but overall this is a moving drama which should be praised for its subtle manner.

Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhall) arrives at the Genesis House, a halfway house for women who have recently been paroled from prison. A recovering heroin addict, she has just completed a sentence for theft. Although she has her own private room, she has chores she must perform a...( read more)nd must share a pay phone with the other residents. Accustomed to using sex to get what she wants, she quickly seduces Andy (Rio Hackford), who manages the house. She also performs oral sex on her job placement counselor so he will get her the job she wants working in a daycare center. Sherry struggles with wanting to use again, and befriends Dean (Danny Trejo), a fellow AA member who remembers her from a bar she used to frequent when she was underage. She wants to be a good mother to her daughter, Alexis (Ryan Simpkins), who has been cared for by Sherry's brother, Bobby (Brad Henke), and sister-in-law, Lynette (Bridget Barkan). Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a truly great performance as Sherry, a young woman who is trying to reconnect with her 5-year old daughter and adjust to being clean in the outside world. This is just a pure slice of life movie with a beginning, a middle and an end, beautifully realized.

sherrybaby is a heartbreaking story about a woman trying to reconnect with her daughter after being away in prison. i would have given it five stars if it wasn't for the sex scenes and the sluttiness of gyllenhaal's character.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the greatest actresses of her generation, hands down. While this drama simmers slowly along, it never explodes into chaos, but it remains riveting the whole time thanks entirely to Gyllenhaal's performance. The entire supporting cast is strong, but the...( read more) best moments, believe it or not, are with Danny Trejo.
