Unlike the Bourne movies this "one man against government conspiracy" film has not much of a story to offer. At least not a very intelligent one. Sure, everything's really nicely filmed (and god bless them for shooting in Philadelphia, a city very dear to me) and some of the acti...( read more)on looks pretty good. The thing is, there is not even that much of it. And the investigation phase works well for a while, but in the end, especially during the showdown, things make not all that much sense. That doesn't make the movie any less entertaining and watchable on a rainy Sunday. If only they would have spared us of all those stereotypes. Why does the guy showing a picture of his beloved always die first? Why is she the only possible hostage person for the film? Why meet a sniper on a huge open snow field? Oh well, it was okay for as long as it lasted. Just don't think about it.

Shooter desperately wants to be a combination of the Bourne movies and Rambo, but it's hampered by one of the most laughably predictable plots that I've ever come across. There is literally nothing unexpected that happens in this movie, from the death of the protagonist's buddy a...( read more)t the beginning to the final revenge scene at the end.

A below average story can often be somewhat overlooked in this kind of a film, but Shooter pushed my tolerance farther than any movie that I've seen in recent memory. The villians are cartoonishly evil, right down to the cackling laughter. The other characters don't fare much better, they're paper-thin and as one-dimensional as they can be. And the dialogue! Good Lord, it sounded like it was all jotted down on a paper napkin in five minutes, right before the filming started. Or maybe there was no script, and the director simply told the actors to say something that sounds bad-ass or evil before each scene. Oh, and let's not forget the "political message" that's tacked onto the movie in an attempt to give it "depth". It was as subtle as a brick to the face, and about as welcome.

So, why am I still giving Shooter a slightly above average score? Because it was somehow a likeable movie, despite the terrible plot and characters. Unsurprisingly, the shooting and action scenes were the saving grace of the film. Most of the sniper stuff was really cool, and Mark Wahlberg was a convincing hero....when his mouth was firmly shut. Rhona Mitra and and Kate Mara were criminally under-used, but their presence was still a plus for the movie. I just wish that they were given more dubstantial to do than be pretty faces and conveniently move the plot along.

If you can somehow buffer your mind against the truly horrible aspects of Shooter, then it can provide two hours of moderate, violence-based fun. Just don't feel bad if the poor story and characters are too much for you to tolerate. I understand, I really do.

"What are you going to do?
    - Exercise my right to bear arms."

Yeah, I'm gonna have to give this a 1 star rating... Why? Well, here's why.

Let's start of by a simple thing as the character name, Bob Lee Swagger. Have the filmmakers intentionally tried to produce the most lethal ...( read more)redneck to the big screen? And it's not just the name but everything about him, his whole screen presence. Mark Wahlberg, although he has made some good performances ('The Departed', 'Boogie Nights'), is one of the most overrated actors of today.

The plot is stupid and an insult against proper government related action thrillers, like 'Bourne' movies, but you really can't mention these two films in the same sentence without losing your credibility. But there's no point to reveal the story, let me just say that 'Shooter' is nothing but another below average action movie.

The action then? If there is something I really hate in action movies is those scenes where a single guy defeats a helicopter that is armed like any other chopper, with either its own arsenal or some side gunner. Helicopter's are like the worst things that a soldier can face in the battlefield and this guy with a typical rifle of course blows it to smithereens. Yeah, absolutely. Otherwise it's all so far fetched that it gets annoying.

The rest of the cast is so wrongly cast or, if not, then the actors have just had seriously bad days on the shooting locations or sets. Danny Glover has made bad films after another after the 'Lethal Weapon' franchise ended in '98, with the exception of 'Be Kind Rewind' that was one of the best films of last year. And Ned Beatty is so bad that I actually hoped that a Georgia back-country yokel would've jumped on the screen and ass raped him like in his first feature film, and one of the best films of the 70's, 'Deliverance'. Like a US Senator would have so much power...

With these points, and if I really would focus more on this film I would find more, I think I have at some level proved that 'Shooter', even if it may be a bit slick, is nothing but a disappointment. So much shit comes pouring down from the Hollywood production studios that I'm getting a bit worried. So much money being wasted on pointless productions...

If you were to take the best parts of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series (Patriot Games, Clear And Present Danger, Sum of All Fears) and mixed in the best parts of the only good Rambo film (First Blood) you would end up with something akin to Shooter. Shooter is a smart, engaging and ...( read more)all out enjoyable action flick that never pulls its punches and always surprises you when you least expect it.

Mark Whalberg plays the role of Bob Lee Swagger, a former military sniper who quit the army following a disastrous mission where his best friend and spotter is killed when they are left behind. Three years later he is hired by a Colonel (played with gusto by Danny Glover) to figure out how a suspected assassin is going to attempt to kill the President from over a mile away, a shot that few could make. Swagger figures out how it is going to be done and is asked to supervise locating the sniper on site. But on the day of the supposed assassination, Swagger is set up with the assassination attempt that kills a visiting diplomat. Swagger is then left on the hunt while trying to prove his innocence.

Shooter twists and turns with an elaborate conspiracy that is very convincing, though of course the writers wimp out and take the cheap road of drawing international oil into the plot (can't writers think of an original plot device?). However, this is hardly a drawback since the rest of the film is solid as a rock. The film really puts you into the shoes of a sniper and gives an impressive overview of the mindset that it takes to be as accurate as someone of the character of Swagger.

The only real distractions in the film would be Elias Koteas, whose psycho performance is heavy-handed and does not fit the film, and Kate Mara who has little to do throughout the film but appear upset or in distress. The film could have done without either characters or their respective actors. As well, some of the character relations seem forced at time, particularly in the relationship between Michael Peña's character of Nick Memphis and his FBI confidante Lourdes, played by Rhona Mitra. Their almost effortless camaraderie comes off as less than convincing.

Overall, Shooter certainly delivers as an entertaining thrill-ride that is certainly not dumbed down in the least. If you want an intelligent action film with lots of impressive gun play and several elaborate, thrilling action sequences to boot, Shooter is right up your alley and will not disappoint

Mark Wahlberg stars in this edge of your seat action thriller. The action's fast-paced, the actors fit their roles, and the 'don't trust the government' undertone is timely.
