this is really boring. don't watch it.

Definitely a kids movie (with a simplistic storyline, awful special effects, and hack philosophizing), but an awfully hilarious one. The awkward magic of some of the robot schtick, combined with a few clever lines from the requisite insane foreign guy, make this movie worthwhile.

Life is not a malfunction. As the story of Short Circuit goes, Nova Laboratories is developing military robots for the US military. When lightning strikes Number 5, he is reprogrammed and is able to act like a human. As he escapes to the real world Number 5 develops a pers...( read more)onality that helps him befriend the young Stephanie, try to avoid capture, and convince his robot creator, Newton Crosby, that he is truly alive. Yes, he is alive...you can't deactivate or disassemble him. I enjoyed this exciting '80s comedy/sci-fi adventure film, as I see this as a mechanical version of E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial for the human/nonhuman friendship element. The creators of WALL-E supposedly saw Number 5 as their inspiration for their titular character - it was while watching Short Circuit when I came with that connection between both. And it does have its share of action moments, of course. :)

Short Circuit is directed by John Badham (of WarGames) and features good acting performances from the following cast:
    1.) Ally Sheedy (Stephanie Speck)
    2.) Steve Guttenberg (Newton Crosby)
    3.) Fisher Stevens (Ben Jabituya)
    4.) Austin Pendleton (Howard Marner)
    5.) G.W. Bailey (Skroeder)
6.) Tim Blaney (Number 5's voice)

Well, my fellow movie fans, when you need a robotic friend, go for Number 5. And watch Short Circuit as a film example of mechanical beings with manlike personalities - you'll like it. Wish I can see this again so I can compare Number 5 as a house mate to a Roomba (a smart vacuum cleaner).

I've just watched short circuit, something I've avoided for so long... what a great little film. It's about a laser-armed Department of Defence robot named Number 5 gets struck by lightning - he "malfunctions" and starts spouting peace slogans and developing a human-like conscio...( read more)usness. As Steve Guttenberg's goofy inventor tries to locate his missing model, the cute cyborg befriends vegetarian animal lover Stephanie and has a series of misadventures. John Badham directs with the lightest of touches, and funny moments include the runaway robot's mimicry of John Wayne, the Three Stooges and John Travolta; not so funny is Number Five's incessant whine of Stephanie, which may force grown-ups to leave the room.
