Plot: The daughter of a riverboat captain falls in love with a charming gambler, but their fairytale romance is threatened when his luck turns sour.
I never finished watching this movie--too little plot and too many songs. I'm a fan of musicals, but it was too much, even for me.
Colourful and big, slightly lacking in soul. Howard Keel is great and Kathryn Grayson is good enough, but Ava Gardner is beautiful and heartbreaking. Still, Lena Horne might have been better... if it weren't for the bigotry.
This movie was in a lot of ways sad, but it had great musical numbers and I really liked how the friends were loyal to each other in their own way, with the older one looking out for the other as best she could.
old man river....yes the deep male voice, the movie deals with racism and discrimination and acceptance
Star dust fell to earth one night and a baby boy inhaled it all ... that was Howard Keel; the man with the richest singing voice ever put to the screen. The whole cast is superb in performing Jerome Kerns and Oscar Hammerstein III's music, but Keel is the most charming of them all. "Can't he'p lovin' dat man o' mine."
Quite gd! I like the dance routines...and of course Howard Keel was his usual macho-self! I can't believe a whiteman could be arrested for marrying a woman with negro blood! tut...
Old Man River...
one of the best musicals (not yet availabl;e on region 2 dvd...why!?!) really lovely story..great music and cast...again howard keel....absolutey brill musical!
I am really thinking of the 1936 version (not that this one is ok) which i can't seem to find on this site (tut tut flixter) Irene Dunne and Allan Jones were magical plus Paul Robeson who can forget Ole Man River,if you hav'nt seen this version please do,you will not be disappointed.
