Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen

A wine tasting road trip to salute Jack's final days as a bachelor careens woefully sideways as he and Miles hit the gas en route to mid-life crises. The comically mismatched pair, who share little mo...( read more  read more... )re than their history and a heady blend of failed potential and fading youth, soon find themselves drowning in wine and women. Emerging from a haze of pinot noir, wistful yearnings and trepidation about the future, the two inevitably collide with reality.

Paul Giamatti is fantastic in this really funny comedy. I also feel quite strongly about Merlot and am often caught quoting this film in restaurants!

Sideways is a bittersweet mix of a somber drama, a buddy comedy, a mid-life crisis or two, and a wine education course. I honestly can't think of any other specific movie to compare it to.

I've seen it on four different occasions as I write this, and every time it strikes me ho...( read more)w brilliant and nuanced Paul Giamatti's performance is. He makes Miles into a real person, with all the flaws that authenticity brings. The rest of the cast is good too, but he stands out even among those other stellar performances.

The gorgeous settings of the California wine country, the air-tight script, and the general atmosphere of the movie all combine to make this a winner in my book. I plan on enjoying Sideways many more times in the future.

My wife nudged me several times during the movie because she sees me in Paul Giamatti's character. Except I know nothing about wine and wine tasting, so I'm more like Thomas Haden Church's character in that respect. This movie is about all the trouble the two buddies get into a...( read more)nd it includes a sweet little romance between Giamatti and Madsen. One scene that Giamatti as Miles and Madsen as Maya share stood out to me in particular. They both bare their souls and you see for the first time that they could really be a good match for each other. Miles shares his love and understanding of the Pinot grape. It is a grape that "needs constant care and attention." The way he describes this type of grape is a perfect metaphor for himself. Then Maya has her monologue about "how [wine is] a living thing." Her understanding of the complexity of life comes across in this beautiful bit of poetry, and we see that she could give Miles the care and attention he needs to become the best person he can be.

Whoever passes on this film because it is about two guys going in a wine trip is missing one of the finest comedies of recent years. Sure, there is some talking about wine, but between the lines the meaning always refers to the characters in their life situations as well. Giamatt...( read more)i and Church create unique characters with their brilliant acting, that you won't forget for years. This slow, yet bittersweet, heart-warming, sometimes hysterically funny film is like a picnic with friends on a sunny afternoon. Teenagers may probably not be able to relate to the themes of the movie very much, but everyone else should admire this smart, greatly written, funny, sad and true masterpiece.

"Sideways" is a film about personal accomplishments - and what it means to be able to distinguish the good stuff from the bad stuff. Just like wine.
It's also about courage and moving on- and accepting one's failures. In retrospect, it's a brave, honest film that can also entert...( read more)ain you. Quite an accomplishment, if you ask me.

A wonderfully crafted modern classic. The story here is so heartfelt and genuine it leaps off the screen and into your head. Now, I don't know the first thing about wine, but I can tell you Giamatti and Church are impeccable together. When the scene calls for a laugh you get it, ...( read more)a somber tone, you get it, or a zesty bite, you get it. These two fine accomplished actors never falter during the entire 2 hours I was enthralled with the film. I loved Thomas' running gag of "I think it's alright." every time he tries a wine. On the other side of the coin is the deep pains Giamatti's Miles character exudes. I've never been big on identifying with characters (because, that's all they are) but I think anyone can understand what's happening and has had such a period in their lives, however small or short lived.

Sideways, based on a fine novel by Rex Pickett, is at once a literate comedy, a subtle examination of grown-up romance and a touching study of friendship. full review

I thus heartily recommend the movie to all men between the ages of 30 and 55 -- if they can take it. Sideways offers few consolations besides the bitter, healing laughter of the morning after. full review

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Doubters may hedge about calling it a classic and might insist on checking back in a few years to see how it has aged. Fair enough. But it's not too early to call it pure movie bliss. full review

This is one of my favourite comedies of all time, and funnily enough, whenever i'm down i watch this film and it is uplifting.

I think someone who says that they would rather 'claw their eyes out' was Freddy Kruger to jump out somewhere.

Sorry they didn't like it, for me it is one of the best films and certainly the best comedy this decade so far.
