Plot: After creating many of the innovative special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Douglas Trumbull tried his hand at directing, and 1971's Silent Running marked an impressive debut. (In ...( read more read more... )addition to creating the visual effects for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and directing 1983's Brainstorm, Trumbull later turned to the creation of high-tech cinematic amusement park rides.) One of the best science fiction films of the 1970s, Silent Running stars Bruce Dern as Freeman Lowell, a nature-loving crewmember aboard the Valley Forge, a gigantic spaceship in a small fleet that carries the last surviving forests of the Earth, which has fallen victim to overpopulation and ecological neglect.

Freeman's name reflects his nonconformist philosophy, which runs counter to the prevailing recklessness of his three ill-fated crewmates, who are eager to jettison their precious payload and return to the bleakness of Earth. Before they can sabotage the forests, Freeman does what he must, and spends the remainder of his mission with three robotic "drones" as his only companions, struggling to maintain his sanity in the vastness of space. Dern is superb in this memorable role, representing the lost soul of humankind as well as the back-to-nature youth movement of the 1960s and the pre-Watergate era. (Appropriately, Joan Baez sings the film's theme song.) A rare science fiction film that combines bold adventure with passionate social conscience, Silent Running will remain relevant as long as the Earth is threatened by the ravages of human carelessness. --Jeff Shannon

Too New-Age nagging, and I consider myself ecologist. Cute little Robots have nothing to do here, and I like cute little robots. Terrible music. Not worthy.

This has got to be one of the most overrated science-fiction of all time. The main character (interpreted by Bruce Dern) is a whining psychopath, and I am talking as an environmentalist and semi-vegetarian myself.

A dry plodding film whose heavy handed environmentalist message is undermined by the atrocious writing and awful performances from everyone outside of Bruce Dern. At times moody and at other's ridiculous, Dern's performance is overall quite hammy. Dated special effects, a disorganized plot, and the worst twist in motion picture history make this film unwatchable.

This is a strange science fiction movie from the 70s directed by the guy who did the special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey. Most of the film is a one man show with Bruce Dern interacting with a bunch of R2-D2 looking robots. The effects have aged better than most movies from the era, and the first act is pretty good. That said Dern is a real ham, and his performance didn?t work for me, which is bad in a one man show. The movie isn?t great, but it blows Logan?s Run out of the water.

I do not understand the good ratings for this film. Lame and failed ecological message. No action after the first 20 minutes. The robots want to be R2D2-like (and R2D2 came later) but they are nothing but a bad joke. Joan Baez sings with great voice the most awful songs. Bad bad bad science fiction. Do not watch this for God's sake!!

Typical early 70s dystopian sci-fi. Good acting, great spaceships, cute robots and a hippie/environmentalist theme(save the forrests) that is even more relevant today than 35 years ago. Flawed but brilliant at times, Bruce Dern puts on a one man show. A hidden gem that begs for a remake.

I hated this movie! I know it was supposed to be good and about saving the enviroment and everything, but it was such a bore and really dumb!

One of the best sci-fi movies of the 1970's. Bleak but dreamlike at the same time. It's the perfect rainy Sunday afternoon movie. It's a shame Douglas Trumbull didn't direct more movies.

A beautifully told, poignant story about a man pushed to the edge. Where most Hollywood sci-fi relies on special effects and explosions, Silent Running is bold enough to trust its lead actor and the weight of the story (along with some pretty nifty visuals). As impressive now as it was in 1972.

I'd always heard about this film but now I've finally seen it. Dern is excellent. The isolation and lack of action will put off a lot of ADHD types but anyone who can appreciate what films are really capable of should enjoy this. My only gripe is that after hearing it talked up for so long, it didn't seem long enough.

I wish I could have the time back that I spent watching this one. I really thought it would be good, a botanist in space with robots. That's box office gold isn't it?

The last forestation from earth is preserved in huge protective domes orbiting the planet, but when the crew of caretakers are ordered to destroy it, Bruce Dern rebels and sets about preserving it no matter what the cost. Thoughtful and intelligent sci-fi from the 70s with an ecological message directed by the effects impressario responsible for 2001. Dern is excellent and you'll never become more attached to a box on legs!

Mildly interesting film from 1972 about a tree-loving astronaut who's been told the Earth's reforestation plans and missions have been scrapped. It's an interesting enough topic, but the film suffered from long drawn out scenes and really could have been just edited down to about 30 minutes.

One of the first dystopian space operas. For the time it presented the reality of the working world where technology is just as finicky as it is today...the robots Huey, Dewey and Louie were the inspiration for the bots in Star Wars...

Inventive but slow moving sci-fi drama in which a man who has been in charge of restoring vegetation in space has trouble obeying the orders to destroy his work. Bruce Dern gives a good performance but some aspects of the film are a little dated.

Yes, it's a B film. Yes, it's Bruce Dern at his hippy best. And yes, it's a great film. This is one you have to see. Find it on DVD or video.

off-beat "green" movie about a loner tending the last earth forest in a biodome in space. Bruce Dern shines in this film.

Despite its flaws,(A biotanist who doesn't realize plants need sunlight, and the whole idea of deforrested Earth with all the plants in domes in space) an entaining SF movie

Was this ever strange.. I'd call this cute sci-fi, I found the story a bit implausible because of the two fold approach; the second half is almost a disney film, where not much happens. I disliked the ending, would have liked him to be rescued, and keep Hewie... Silent Running is cute but that's pretty much all it has going for it really, forgettable.

The special effects are dated, but the story's what holds the movies together, as well as the robots.

As a sci-fi fan I'm surprised I hadn't come across this film earlier. Bruce Dern gives one of his best performances - you actually feel his frustration and empathise with his increasingly crazy behaviour. Also, considering it was made in the 70s, it deals with an extremely relevant topic - much more relevant now than when the film was actually made.

A very quirky and interesting sci-fi flick. Bruce Dern puts on a one man show, and the special effects are awesome for its day.

If I had to put a moment to it, would have to say that this is the film that turned me into a greenie. I weep buckets every time I see it...
