First of all I'm pretty proud (and a bit shocked, I must admit) to be the first person reviewing Simon, and apparently the only one that has seen it, considering that the film wasn't even here...

And why am I shocked? Well, because if I would have to make a list of the best films of 2004 Simon would unquestionably be on it, probably ahead of Million Dollar Baby or Sideways. This is one of those films that we see once in a lifetime, that has everything we could possibly wish in less than 2 hours... Funny, touching, thoughtfull... A film that manages to search, study and show the essence of life (life, death, friendship, love...) like Simon does is, in my book, a masterpiece.

The unlikely friendship bethween a gay man (Camiel) and an easy going, rude, typical straight one (Simon). Simon is probably one of the most fascinating characters I've ever seen. He's just... Simon. You're not given any other choice but to love him. Like I said, he's rude, a drug dealer, makes gay-jokes all the time, cheats on his girlfriend, but you just can't help it. The link between Camiel and Simon shows us the real meaning of true, genuine friendship, even when there's a 14 year old gap without seing each other and so many diferences between them. That was probably one of the things that I loved the most. The way that Simon and Camiel reencountered each other, almost 'karmacally', and making those 14 years almost vanish. If believed in Faith I would say it was what brought them together. Maybe Simon needed Camiel to help him in his last months before the cancer took him. Yes, Simon has cancer. But the truth is that the film is never that old 'man is dying with cancer' clichetic film, on the contrary. Simon never changes, he stays the same old Simon that everyone loves (including ourselves). Of course, to play a character like that it would take a unique actor. And that's what Cees Geel is! His perfromance is just... WOW! If this was Hollywood he would have one of those little golden trophees at his house. And so would Simon itself. A lot of credit has to do too Eddy Terstall as well. He directed and wrote a modern masterpiece... It was the oficial Dutch submission for the '05 Foreign Language Oscar, but it wasn't even nominated... Maybe that's the reason why almost no one knows it. Why wasn't it nominated? I honestly don't know. Perhaps it was just 'too dutch', too european. Too much sex, drugs, mindspoken people and polemic themes (like Euthanasia) involved. Too 'non American'...

Either way, my wish is for everyone to see this. Rent it, buy it, just see it!

Hij verandert je leven (He changes your life). He really does...
