12-year-old Bernie has always been the invisible member of a fairly bland and characterless family, and the only thing keeping him going is the hope that the grand day of his Bar Mitzvah will change his life. Desperate to ensure his day lives up to his brother's, Bernie plans every detail as though nothing else matters. Everything is going wonderfully, until he discovers that July 30th is not just the day of his Bar Mitzvah, but also the day of the World Cup Final. Bernie, heart-broken at the thought of having his day stolen by a bunch of men kicking a ball around, devotes his time entirely to football, researching and doing everything he can to ensure England do not get through to the final. 'Sixty Six' is completely adorable is every sense of the word- the story is fantastic, and although it's not painfully hilarious, the script has its moments and the characters are great fun. Helena Bonham Carter is the real star in one of her most loveable roles yet, and although the boy can't really act, he's sweet enough to get away with it. My main problem is with the ending (at the game), since I kind of wish they could have left the football out of it, but it's alright and the very end is fantastic. Totally harmless, and beautifully original...
Enjoyable comedy drama about a young boy who's realised his Bar Mitzvah is going to clash with the 1966 world cup final which leads him to question his importance to the people around him. Great performances by Helena Bonham Carter as the boy's mother and the young man himself. It's one of those films that will not live long in the memory but is worth watching. It's just ashame that its about the England football team who are shit.
This is pretty much the only movie i ever was on the brink of tears. It's so powerful and so beautiful. Not a big-budget movie yet it's another david and goliath story, the little film beats the big ones.
Very charming comedy with heartwarming based on the real-life experience about a 12-year-old's Bar Mitzvah becomes a complete disaster because of the World Cup Final.
Quite a charming coming of age movie about a boy planning his upcoming Bar Mtizvah and learning rather quickly that life doesn't always go according to play. I found myself chuckling most of the way through it.
cheap british flicks about boys growing up seem to be the eaisiest way to get filming recognition nowadays and this by the numbers exaple is textbook of that ideology. bland and boring
It was rather amusing at points, and rather emotional at others. Good film, great acting and some brilliant memories for England!
not a very good movie, not at all as it was advertised, wasn't funny! kept expecting Catherine Tate to say bothered! lol
World Cup, Bar Mitzvahs, 1960's life in England, with two good measures of comedy and sentiment - if you like that kind of combo you'll probably enjoy this. I found it dragged a little in places but on the whole an entertaining rental. And a lesson to learn: things don't always go how you plan them but it the end it all works out! :D
A great little film which is nicely themed and well detailed. Everything feels really British (and so it should!), and is really nicely edited and ties in great with the original world cup footage. Definately worth a watch if you fancy something unstressful to gaze at for a bit :-)
Enjoyable, if fimiliar, coming of age story heightened by some great performances and a genuine warmth and affection. It goes to show, very ordinary stories can leap off the screen with great acting and a little bit of creative direction and it's here 'Sixty Six' scores high. With many laugh out loud moments as well as touching ones, this is little gem indeed. Most of all it's comment on the Jewish culture is nowhere near as irratating or overdone as previous attempts. It's a warm and funny film and those that like their comedy on the sweet side will embrace it.
