Jarrod (Brian Stillar) is an alcoholic whose health is failing him and whose relationship with his family has been in sorry shape for years. Jarrod's severe diabetes has recently cost him his sight, and while spending his days in a hospital ward, Jarrod discovers his younger brother has turned his dog over to the pound, where the animal will be put down in a few days. For years, the dog had been Jarrod's closest friend, and he decides to visit his pet one last time. However, Jarrod's doctor believes his patient is in no condition to leave the hospital, and orders Thomas (Tony Adah), an orderly, to keep an eye on him. When Jarrod escapes in pursuit of his dog (and a stiff drink), Thomas gives chase, though he has plenty of issues of his own to deal with. Sleeping Dogs received its world premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
Susan Walker, Toronto Star
A most tedious bit of filmmaking, as painful to watch as one imagines the characters' lives might be.
-
Ken Eisner, Variety
There's little here for people who like their pics loud, colorful and tidy. But Sleeping Dogs does offer some raw meat for auds willing to sniff out a little something extra.
-
Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail
Sleeping Dogs give hope for the future of Canadian art-house cinema, and proof that intriguing work is the opposite of what's obvious and unambiguous.
-
Bruce Kirkland, Jam! Movies
Minimalist cinema should feel like a pure distillation of reality, not just a real drag.
