Based on a much-praised 1992 bestseller by Peter Hoeg, Smilla's Sense of Snow is a film of moody power and boundless mystery in its first half, but it becomes an overblown, conspiracy-laden sch...( read more  read more... )lock thriller in its second. Julia Ormond stars as the half-Inuit, Greenland native of Hoeg's book, a loner who is supported by an emotionally ambivalent father (Robert Loggia) in Copenhagen. Apparently perceived as a troublemaker who sees secret plots everywhere, Smilla finds herself largely alone in an effort to discover what really happened to a six-year-old Inuit boy who fell (or jumped) off the roof of her apartment building. Somewhat aided by an ambiguous neighbor (Gabriel Byrne), Smilla investigates a connection between the child's death and the misdeeds of a mining company, a story hook that conveniently ratchets up the action but quickly dissipates the more compelling, introspective intrigue of the film's beginning. Ormond is fascinating, somehow more beautiful than usual through her emphasis of her character's destabilizing conflicts (isolation and a possibly unhinged intelligence). But she isn't done any favors by an unreliable script or by the usually superb Danish director Bille August's chronic problems working in English-language films (including his disastrous The House of the Spirits). The DVD edition of this film includes an original theatrical trailer and a short feature on the making of the production. --Tom Keogh

Smilla's Sense of Snow has an eerie yet hypnotic style to it that really caught me by surprise. This is a mysterious film, based on a bestseller that I confess, I?ve not read, so can't comment on as an adaptation but I can recommend this to anyone who likes their films to be bot...( read more)h original, compelling and highly unpredictable!

A uniquely compelling and engrossing thriller. Billie August's perplexing and fascinating film contains Julia Ormond's single best performance and has a bizarre, oddball plot and wonderful supporting performances from Gabriel Byrne and Richard Harris. A brilliant thriller.

What a compelling, shocking movie. This had me starved to find out the ending and I've watched it several times. The suspense kills me!

Smilla is a very real person, very believable, and I absolutely adore her.

The Best Movie I have seen for the Month of March, ranks as an all time high. Smilla is a star. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your chair. I can't believe that this film didn't get more awards, its a sleeper. Other then the Berlin International Film Festival I don't t...( read more)hink it showed up anywhere else. The young boy played a good part. A must see must add to any collection, starts in Greenland then to Denmark, my type of film, one that shows anything but America. 5 Stars. Thank you.

The first half is taut and interesting, while the second half degenerates into a second-rate thriller. It seemed quite obvious that there was just not enough time to cover what must be a great book. Dan Brown's Deception Point feels like a blatant rip-off.

Bille August's great declane. After creating 3 masterpieces, He is U-TURNED.

I need to watch this again. I haven't seen it since I was pretty young, so I should rewatch it to give it a proper rating.

Isaiah's the child i want to bear, it really is. i love his way of being, his eyelids, his way of saying "Ilaga, Ilaga". Smilla's numbers and ice, she's lovely to death. and Gabriel Byrne it's so similar to Sean Penn, and i love them both (plus, he stutters! *oh, oooh*)
