“Sneakers” in 1992, in which he played computer nerd Carl Arbogast (shades of “Explorers”!), was much more of a mainstream role for River, unlike his recent efforts. He teamed up again with Sidney Poitier and alongside the experienced Robert Redford and James Earl Jones. River had previously met Redford when he auditioned for a part in the Redford directed film “A River Runs Through It”, but he lost the part to Brad Pitt. Even in such distinguished company the young star is credited with stealing scenes from both and providing the comic relief at various stages of the movie.
River established a good rapport with co-star Dan Ackroyd during the making of “Sneakers”, so much so that Ackroyd was the one person who River would listen to in regards to his drug habits. Nevertheless, River totally disliked the movie, even telling his friends not to see it. “I trashed myself in this. I will never appear in a teen magazine again.
