I guess it's Lee Pace week for me. (He never disapoints)
This (Showtime) movie is impressive on many levels. It touches on everything from the ridiculousness of some of the militaries policies (both on homosexuals serving and recruiting practices in general), sexual represion, and the beauty of true love.
The two main actors (Troy Garity & Lee Pace) do a truly amazing job at conveying the deep complexities of both of their (very different, but perfectly matched) characters.
Even though there are a few very poorly written (after school special) moments of dialog and some of the charaters are a little too over the top/sterotypical for their own good...the cast as a whole is strong enough to carry you past these minor irritations. And the message isn't too badly cheapened by it.
All things concidered it was a pretty powerful movie. And the fact that it is based on actual events...makes it a very timely and important film.
All though at times Soldier's Girl at times feels like the made for TV movie that it is, the performance of Lee Pace and, to a lesser degree, Troy Garity really help it stand out. They are able to add emotional gravity as their scenes together feel very sincere and honest. Definitely a tragic story of born from intolerance and ignorance. All in all a good movie that leaves you saddened a little that this type of intolerance still runs rampant in our society.
this one of the most wounderful flim it is an unconvetule love story that really really work on all levels. No matter what else is happing in the story it a love story. showing how love is not about what one see but what one feels. the conction of two souls.
I've first seen this with my sisters, one had an interest in this movie so I watched it then. The story is very sweet and touching, but yet the outcome is truly heartwrenching. It's so sad!
Love the music, and KD LANG is phenomenal. Love her voice.
Tragic, just like the opening monologue says, and very nicely put together. It might be a little slow at first, but it's very...intimate, seems like a good word for it. You see where every character comes from with their actions and opinions, save for in the case of the bald-headed best friend. That guy was a prick. XP
Here's what kills me about this movie: It's well-done, and I'm a definite fan. The bad thing is, I knew almost everyone involved in this event personally, and it's very hard to watch for me, especially the scene in the hallway. It's shattering. Really.
'Soldiers Girl' chronicles the brutal death of Barry Winchell. It's certainly difficult to watch but nonetheless a movie everyone should see. Troy Garity and Lee Pace play their parts beautifully.
I am going out on a limb to give five stars. I was serving in Korea during the time of this fellow soldier death. I am not sure if the the distance or military's intolerance to "homosexual" activity kept this from reaching me. Thanks to Showtime, I learned about the ugly truth of his tragic death. If you are not afraid to look into this lifestyle, please view this movie. While I know this behavior is immoral by christian beliefs, I still believe that everyone has the right to be happy and love whom he or she desires.
The makers of Brokeback Mountain should have watched this movie before going into production. I wanted to change the channel, but I couldn't. this movie was downright chilling.
