Sorority Boys Reviews and Ratings

The first thing I should make clear is that that I am not a fan of the 'teen gross out' genre that seems to have become a classic of our cinema screens of late, but as an example of this genre Sorority Boys is no worse than any other and is not without its redeeming features.

Ba...( read more)ck in production possibly someone actually had a spark of a semi-original idea here, but somewhere along the way that's disappeared in a mist of the 'how many anatomy gags can we fit in an hour and a half' school of screen writing, that's been so common of late. However I actually don't think this is a wholly bad thing! Any attempt to actually treat the 'social issues' flirted with in any serious manner would just come feeling cheap and anyway I don't think we really need another film that tries to tell us women don't always get a fair deal in our world!

Three typical college lads get tricked out of their frat house and end up in drag to join the 'ugly' sorority house that they had spent so much time dissing, -cue several actually quite attractive actresses trying to look unattractive. Surprise surprise the lads learn a little of what it's like to be a not especially attractive woman and come out better people, the guy gets the girl and the lads end up back in their own frat as nicer people. Not that the plot is predictable or anything!

The plot is quite lame and crude visual jokes abound but if you're a fan of this style of film, or willing to overlook that then there are saving graces. The humour and slight social commentary in the relationship between the lads and their female sides and between the lads themselves as they find themselves behaving like women (or their idea of how women behave), even in private and as they try to reconcile now being what they once reviled, does provide some sparks of good writing. The cast, especially Barry Watson and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor in Smallville) do rema rkably well with what they're given, although a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required to believe that anyone could actually not see that they were men in drag.

On the whole it's a likeable, college frat comedy, whose laughable plot is rescued by visual gags, occasional good dialogue and eminent performances from certain cast, just don't expect Casablanca,. Be aware that it is misogynistic, at least initially, that some of the humour is overtly sexual and 'gross-out', that you're there to laugh not understand the social issues and be prepared to suspend disbelief. Oh, and Lex Luthor looks surprisingly good in a dress
