Soul Survivors

Melissa Sagemiller, Wes Bentley, Eliza Dushku, Casey Affleck, Luke Wilson

Think of Soul Survivors as a more sincere version of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The night before Cassie (the Gwynethesque Melissa Sagemiller) starts college, she gets into a terrifying c...( read more  read more... )ar accident with her boyfriend (Casey Affleck) and best friends (Wes Bentley from American Beauty and Eliza Dushku from Bring It On and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But was it an accident? And who survived? Cassie starts college--but she also keeps hallucinating about frightening men she saw at a party prior to the accident, as well as about undergoing surgery after it. Is college itself the hallucination? These slips from one reality to the next build an increasing sense of discomfort and anxiety--though some viewers may be made more anxious by a scene in which Sagemiller and Dushku step into a shower together. Or do they... --Bret Fetzer

I can say with confidence that I don't have a damn clue what happened in Soul Survivors. Was it all a dream? A nightmare? Is Cassie dead? Alive? In-between? I dunno. Writer/director Steve Carpenter's script is just way too muddled to be even remotely close to coherent. Dead char...( read more)acters pop up, they disappear. Other characters, presumably, have connections to the dead, but we're never sure why or how. Events in the film often take place twice or three times, sometimes completely different from the original incident. In other words, it's all very confusing. Casey Affleck as the dead boyfriend and Luke Wilson as the kindly Father Jude both have charisma. Casey Affleck (Sean) delivers when he?s onscreen, his baby blue eyes help him a lot and his soft voice comes through. Wes Bentley (Matt) doesn?t play a psychopath but he sure looks like one.

Really poor excuse for a horror, you think it's a slasher film but then it's not. Terrible.

Saw it coming. In fact, I saw it back in 1990 -- it was called Jacob's Ladder.

Great lesbian scene but a lackluster movie all around.

    Eliza's hot. Otherwise... crapola.

It was a bit more confusing than scary.

There was nothing particularly original about the material here, but some how the elements of the story were put together in a way that kept my interest. Overall, I have to say I enjoyed it.

Too much like JACOB'S LADDER. Good visuals and performances, but there's just not enough here to really like.
