Tom Huddlestone, Time Out
Coupling the men-on-a-mission antics of 'Armageddon' with the catch-all sci-fi pastiche of TV's 'Futurama', 'Space Chimps' is an underwhelming slice of lowbrow CGI entertainment.
-
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
I have to admit, there's a sort of dopey, cute, harmless charm to this movie. It actually doesn't stink.
-
Claudia Puig, USA Today
Only a truly dreadful story could make 81 minutes seem like an eternity. And Space Chimps is just that leaden experience.
-
Susan Walker, Toronto Star
The animated action movie nevertheless delivers -- da-dum -- more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
-
-
Michael Ordoña, Los Angeles Times
There's probably not enough fuel beyond cute chimps in Candyland to achieve orbit for the kids.
-
David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews
...strikes virtually all of the wrong notes right from the get-go...
-
Brian Webster, Apollo Guide
It's likely that few people will ever even notice the success it might have been or the unremarkable failure it turned out to be.
-
David Cornelius, DVDTalk.com
Nothing here works. At all.
-
Jeffrey Westhoff, Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, IL)
Some days you just can't resist cartoon chimps mocking William Shatner's delivery.
-
Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle
A film that, in a non-Pixar dominated reality, would be cleaning up at the box office. It's enough to make you laugh.
-
Brent Simon, Screen International
Space Chimp's narrative pendulum swings illustrate, in contrasting fashion, the care, depth and shading given to storylines by Pixar and creators of other top-shelf animated fare.
-
Jonathan W. Hickman, Entertainment Insiders
While it is not a transcendent flick, it will certainly provide necessary child pacification on a hot Saturday afternoon.
-
Kit Bowen, Hollywood.com
It's pretty much your run-of-the-mill CGI effort (and remember the days when the technology used to inspire 'ahhs and ohhhs?').
-
Julian Shaw, FILMINK (Australia)
There is genuine sparkle in the voice work and more than a few jokes that really do hit the sweet spot.
-
Jake Wilson, The Age (Australia)
A movie called Space Chimps ought to be cheap, crude and silly, and this computer-animated lark delivers on all fronts.
-
Urban Cinefile Critics, Urban Cinefile
A sweet and harmless family film.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Film Threat
Cheap animation and a virtually non-existent plot pretty much destroy any semblance of potential this one-note premise has from the starting gates.
-
Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
A real writer would have turned this in to a great animated action flick instead of animated ADD pabulum...
-
, This is London
The film is pacy, full of humour rather than thrills and not too long. Not for connoisseurs of animation but fun for the young.

Basically its the same kind of kids film over again but made worse cos the main characters are chimps and kinda spooky haha
The best thing about the whole film is Patrick Warburtons voice :) he just has a brilliantly funny tone to his voice that is deep flat and sarcastic, always works.

Space Chimps has a very interesting premise that might have made a good movie if it also had good animation and less monkey puns.

Fun animated Space Chimps movie, kept me engaged. The jokes were funny enough. I liked how they thought at first the mission was just another training exercise. I liked the Herbie Hancock music. It was cool when they landed on the alien planet. Each of the chimps had different personalities. The animation budget was a bit crude, so the space effects weren't as beautiful, dynamic and believable as WALL-E.

Chimps in space is a great idea for ananimated film. Chimps are just funny and a space setting should have contained enough excuses for bizarre and far out situations. Unfortunately Space Chimps is simply a poorly animated film with not enough content, story or laugh wise, to make it worth your time. There isn't even a single stand out character to keep you interested in a very mediocre plot which involves some aliens that all look the same, presumably because of a lack of imagination and budget. The voice talents are wellsuited but fail to bring life to stone dead facial features. It isn't terrible but with the likes of Wall-E and the works of Miyazaki propelling the animated genre into a new and more sophisticated domain this is simply a forgettable entry.

Quite boring and routine. Even the animation was uninspired.
-
I liked it. The animation certainly isn't cutting edge, but it gets the job done. The jokes are more hit than miss.

The Dark Knight was an amazing movie by the way, my reveiw for it will be posted on Flixter by tommorow night. Back to Space Chimps. Space Chimps was just too stupid. The humor was always used at the wrong times. The voice acting was terrible. The plot was terrible. Ah what the hell, the whole movie was terrible.

in this obvious buy-the-vidgame hourlong commercial saving grace comes from the verbal antics that spice the CGI visuals. not quite up to rocky and bullwinkle standards, mind you, still the filmmakers remembered the poor parents who will probably be chided endlessly about adding this to their little spinoffs private collection of homework avoidance high tech. thus the life here, if you're over 8---and i just barely qualify, is in the verbal riffing the actors are allowed to indulge themselves. not as bad as you might be thinkin'.

Wittily written, decently animated and reasonably acted film that is just okay instead of great. The pieces and the individual scenes all work nicely and are more often then not funny and clever. It's clear that the filmmakers were playing to both to the adults as well as the kids. . The pieces never fully come together. Its like looking at a puzzle where the pieces come together to for a picture but its not complete because the pieces never quite touch. The part of the problem is that they never had a complete idea or story. The graphics here are kept simple and uncomplicated. As a family kid movie, I would say that this is a go, just don't expect anything like Shrek.

I was really looking forward seeing this movie but sadly I was very disappointed. The story is about some chimps being trained as austronauts and they get the opportunity to go to space. I thought the story lacked information and excitement and there clearly are a lot of talented animators who wasted their time making this movie.

Does in fact deliver chimps in space, and a non sequitur or two to keep the grown-ups awake.

Taking about a bad idea for a film: Chimps in outer space. The recycled plot from many science fiction movies with a bunch of terribly obnoxious characters was a bad idea, big time. I absolutely hated all the characters, the racism and stupidity of the script. Even the kids wouldn't enjoy this flick, the reason I gave it 1 star is because of the nice voice acting from Andy Samberg.
-
Meh, the only reason I watched this was because Andy Samberg is the voice of Ham III. The story needed a lot of work, but the actors and the animation get you through it.
-
A few good laughs, but that's all. Richard Roeper said this was the worst movie of the year, didn't think it was quite that bad. Clearly he had not seen "Interview" before making that comment. This film at least has "some" entertainment value.

'Space Chimps' should come with a warning, because the lack of a large studio, star names (hallmarks of contemporary 3D animated features) and most particularly the poor, crude animation means you're likely to dismiss it before you have even heard a plot summary, let alone viewed the whole film. I'm glad I saw it, but a severe lack of faith, whether financial or artistic, means the potential still outweighs the final result.
Ham III is the grandson of the first chimpanzee in space; yet unwilling to live up to his grandfather's legacy, he works as an entertainer in an out-of-town circus - and he loves every minute of it. Only when a stern senator suggests finding the bravest chimp for the tough job of hurling through a wormhole does Ham find himself part of a new crew and ready to take on the vast skies of space.
It could be argued 'Space Chimps' is beset with a number of unforgivable problems; the lack of flair and imagination in character design, the disorganised plotting of narrative, the ignorance behind evolutionary logic etc. But thanks to a number of well-timed and pretty witty jokes inserted here and there, you start to wonder whether a little more devotion could have actually gone a long way.
Most of these jokes are primarily aimed at the adult audience though, which leaves kids to enjoy the funny monkeys and bright colours; a tad derogatory I think, but I continuously felt as though the screenwriter and director had plenty more to say. That they weren't given the chance, and that their project was only a half-realised version of what they imagined.
Okay so I shouldn't praise a film for its potential; as much as I enjoyed the chimps romantic banter or some playful satire the aliens of another planet still seem straight out of a cheap Saturday-morning kids programme. And the characters are in no way memorable, or really even lovable... and I just knocked off another half-star. I suppose it's enjoyable while it lasted, but ultimately falls short of really giving you something to talk about.

I liked the movie, andy samberg has that kinda humor i can sink my teeth into, with puddy (andy warburton) just has that voice that goes so good with zany animation. Good movie just to sit back and enjoy.

I wish there were more chimps in space, far away from me, I hate them.
