In this adventure drama, four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots within an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop; Corvin went on to become an aerospace engineer, Hawkins continued on as a freelance pilot, O'Neill became an astrophysicist… More

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"It's a rare pleasure to watch four terrific actors having the time of their lives."
‑ Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"The movie may not pack anything near the emotional punch of Unforgiven, but it's an entertainingly raffish action-comedy nonetheless."
‑ J. Hoberman, Village Voice
"Weak and saggy script meets predictable plot."
‑ Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
"A terrible effort with a bland script, boring plot, and uninspired story..."
‑ Felix Vasquez Jr., Cinema Crazed
"Charm and personality are able to overwhelm the inherent silliness of the situation and the characters."
‑ Ron Wells, Film Threat
"An absorbing mix of perilous suspense, derring-do, personal courage and well-judged self-sacrifice."
‑ Todd McCarthy, Variety
"Eastwood's economy of gesture both behind and in front of the camera is a pleasure in itself."
‑ Jay Carr, Boston Globe
"Problems are evident, and eminent, from a black-and-white flashback prologue in which four young men speak with old actors' voices. Yes, a man purportedly in peak physical condition sounds like a 70-year-old who's eaten bags of gravel daily for 30 years."
‑ Nick Rogers,
" equivocal movie that can't seem to decide whether to play its ridiculous premise straight."
‑ Philip Martin, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
"Despite the poignancy of old age, the mood of the film is cheerful, sustained by the high spirits of the four veterans."
‑ Edward Buscombe, Sight and Sound
"There's an abundance of charm and screen presence from the four veteran actors."
‑ Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Space Cowboys works both as a humorous action movie and a cultural statement."
‑ Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
"Grumpy Old Astronauts--or, rather, Grumpy Old Air Force Officers Who Get Sent into Space to Fix a Damaged Satellite."
‑ Michael Dequina,
"It's tempting to pin a derisive label like Geezers in Space on this comedy-drama, but its veteran stars...make Space Cowboys hard to dislike."
‑ Judith Egerton, Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY)
"I hope a few more scripts for these old geezers are in the offing. Like the Lemmon-Matthau films, this one is just plain fun."
‑ Jean Lowerison, San Diego Metropolitan
