Rutger Hauer, Kim Cattrall, Neil Duncan

Rutger Hauer and Kim Cattrall star in this festival of stolen plots and embarrassing dialogue. Harley Stone (Hauer) is a tough cop. The kind of cop who lives by his own rules. The kind of cop who smok...( read more  read more... )es, swears, and eats junk food. The kind of cop who slams people into walls to drive home a conversational point. If it sounds like you've seen this character before, you have. Split Second is not so much a movie as a cinematic crib sheet, cheerfully ripping off Jaws, Aliens, and Hauer's own Blade Runner, just to name a few. Which is not for a moment to suggest that the movie isn't fun to watch. Connoisseurs of horror-action also-rans will be in spasms of delight over everything from the ludicrous plot to the cookie-cutter dialogue ("They say he's the best." "He is.") to the incredibly misguided decision to have Stone eat chocolate truffles throughout the entire film. It is honestly sometimes hard to tell what is an intentional joke and what's just plain bad. Anyway, there's a serial killer rampaging through London in 2008 and Stone doesn't want a new partner, especially one with all that book learning and blah, blah, blah. Just turn your brain off and enjoy the magic. --Ali Davis

Cliche and predictable, yet more fun than any recent hollywood monster. Cattrall was looking good in those days, and Hauer was the guy for this type of roles.

    Was okay.

All the performances are superb and it is a shame that this movie was so overlooked at the time. Unfortunately now that it actually is the 21st century, it's a bit anachronistic.

A guilty pleasure, this one. Part Blade Runner, part Alien, part CHUD... it's ridiculous but fun.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I can't believe I haven't had a chance to review it before now. Sure when you look at the "Thing" it looks like it is a prop that got cleptoed from Aliens but the movie is just balls out, big guns and great one liners. This is back in the da...( read more)y of Rutger makin good movies mind you, needless to say the plot is interesting, I'm sure many today would tear it apart but that doesn't make it any less a classic. You got Rutger who is the epitome of the rogue cop. His partner died by this "thing" that he is hunting and he has vowed to go after it always being just a step behind. Everyone thinks he's gone off the sane train as he carries "big big guns" and is often called paranoid. He lives on Ra-Ra's (chocolate mini donuts), coffee and nicotine. This guy is the character that bad asses are based off of. He's human/weaker side has a thin for his partners old wife Kim Cattrall and you see him soften when she's around. With the introduction of a new partner to watch over his shenanigans the two are on the hunt for a serial murder in "futuristic England" which apparently takes place in 2008. I remember watching this growing up and thinking about 2008 being the future, now it's a year passed. If you like some gratuitous violence and a sort of typical buddy cop movie where the straight edge sees that the crazy one is the only one that's in fact sane you can't lose. This movie is a classic and should be seen by everyone once.

Any movie with an automatic shotgun gets points.

yes, there are enough clichees here, but i still love this one

Hauer is a great antihero, the mood is dark and hopeless, the monster is quite funny, and there are enought jokes and enough tension to keep you fascinated
also nice is that noone cares to exactly explain what or who...( read more) that monster is, providing the movie with a bit of mystery

this movie works more like alien or seven, or maybe even blade runner - on the psychological level, do not expect it to be action loaded, but enojoy the darkness and tension inside

a great plus point for the movie is that they didn't make a sequel. i guess they had no money for it, but still great - most movies do not benefit from a second part

so as i already said - i loved it, but i can see that not everyone will
still - give it a try

I just watched this again just now. Its STILL kicks ass. I love Rutger Hauer's no-nonsense cop and Duncan's Uni Gradiate preppy boy mixture.
The action is still there, the humour still craics me up, even after 10-15 years. LOVE it!
    BRILLIANT stuff!
