Splitting Heirs

Barbara Hershey, Brenda Bruce, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Eric Idle, John Cleese

Eric Idle and John Cleese team up in this farce about a lowly bank employee who tries to claim the noble title that is his birthright. Seems there was a switcheroo when Tommy was born, and Tommy was i...( read more  read more... )nadvertently substituted with an American baby by his drug-addled mom, the Duchess of Bournemouth. What's worse, the would-be duke just happens to be Tommy's best friend, and the Duchess (who's clueless about Tommy's real identity) is hot for him!

The actors in this film are certainly trying their hardest but this is a largely unfunny attempt at recreating the classic British farce. It does, however, have one redeeming feature: Sadie Frost (in a small role) is soooo gorgeous and plucky that the film might just be worth se...( read more)eing if you're a fan of hers (you've seen her in Bram Stoker's Dracula and - maybe - in Paul Anderson's first film, Shopping.)

Splitting Heirs is the story of Tommy Patel, a British man who learns he was adopted by a Pakistan family at birth. It also tells of Henry, a man from America who learns, after his father's death, he is the next heir to the throne. Unfortunately for him, Tommy learns that he is t...( read more)he rightful heir and will stop at nothing to reclaim what should be his.

The movie is good for a few laughs and the actors all do a good job throughout. Barbara Hershey plays the loving (and sex crazed) mother of Henry, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the bombshell bride to Henry, Rick Moranis stars as Henry (who is nice to everyone even after he learns of his new title), and Eric Idle as Tommy, who just wants what is rightfully his. John Cleese also makes an appearance as the money grubbing lawyer for Tommy, who will also stop at nothing to get rid of Henry.

A dull, long, uninspired 87 minutes with occasional fleeting flickers of slightly humorous moments (e.g. the car with the bicycles is fun).
