"Agent Dick Steele" (Leslie Neilsen), codename: "WD-40," comes out of retirement when the daughter of his late partner "Victoria Dahl" (Stephanie Romanov, who also plays her daughter "Barbara Dahl") is kidnapped by his archenemy "Genral Rancor" (TV legend Andy Griffith), whom he assumed was killed when his heilocopter exploded on his last assignment, which also saw the death of "Victoria."
"Rancor" is again planning to take over the world, and "Steele" is the only one who can stop him.
Just like any of Neilsen's movies, starting with the "Naked Gun" series, there are lots of sight gags. Sadly, in my opinion, the majority of them will give you a really good chuckle. There are a few gags and verbal jokes which will make you laugh out loud.
There are also many scenes which parody some well known scenes in some movies that came out up to the point of this film's release.
Watching Neilsen in this film is one of the best parts of the movie. It is amazing that he is able to keep a straight face with all the gags that are going on around him the majority of the time.
Griffith is good in the role that is so different from the types of roles he is known and loved for. However, he isn't used enough in the film to really expand on the character. However, like Neilsen, he plays his character straight and is enjoyable.
The rest of the cast does a fair to decent job with what they are given. It's too bad that they aren't used to their full potential.
Possibly the worst part of the movie is that the jokes seemingly don't stop. You have to keep your eye on the screen to make sure you don't miss a joke. At least the "Airplane" movies gave you a break in the comedy once in awhile.
"Spy Hard" would probably be good to view on cable, or a solid second choice rental.
Spy Hard wasn't nearly as good as most of Leslie Nielsen's spoofs but it still made me laugh a couple of times.
Awful film. There's maybe one good scene in the entire film, and even so, it still feels slightly contrived.
I was watching this on TV while working on photos. It is so dated and trying way too hard to be the Airplane of spy spoof movies. I remember seeing this in a theater and wasn't very impressed. It's enjoyable, but fits into the "if you've seen one, you've seen them all" syndrome that so many of Leslie Nielsen's post-Airplane projects turn out to be.
I was surprised that Stephanie Romanov was in Spy Hard .I know her best from Angel.
A man of intrigue, he lives for the thrill.
Always has places to go, and people to kill.
Danger is the game he plays, and he holds every card.
'Cause if you wanna win, you gotta spy hard.
A man of the world, so suave and discrete.
He trips over the women piled up at his feet.
But evil's lurking, so he's always on his guard.
'Cause if you're gonna spy, you better spy hard.
He's always there when the chips are beginning to fall.
He wouldn't care if they kicked him and grabbed him
And shot him and stabbed him
And nailed both his ears to the wall.
Facing death every day is a tough job for any man.
But his hours are flexible, and he's got a great dental plan.
By the way, if you walked in late,
Allow me to reiterate:
The name of this movie is "Spy Hard".
They call it "Spy Hard".
You're watching "Spy Hard".
It's the theme from "Spy Hard".
In thi sfilm Leslie Neilsen is just sofunny in this. It take great writ ing talent to make spoofs work. This one does. Weird Al's singing and subsequent exploding head put it over the top.

This is where the spoof films started to go downhill. And fast. It gives a few laughs however, and most of those are due to Nielson working his ass off.
A Cheap spoof but it really does make you laugh. You don't watch spoof movies for quality plots anyway do you?
Leslie Nielsen's last great spoof movie.
Nielsen plays Dick Steele, Agent WD-40 who is out to stop General Ranchor (Andy Griffith) from taking over the world and having lots of fun while doing it.
Includes a fun cameo by former A-Team star, Mr. T.
Dissapointing spy spoof. Neilson does a good job as agent Dick Steele, but nothing else here is good.
Fearless, sophisticated and debonair, Agent WD-40, a.k.a. Steele--Dick Steele, was The Agency's star spy until he left after his true love, a fellow agent, literally slipped through his fingers during a battle with the evil General Rancor.
Another spoof starring Leslie Nielsen sending up Die Hard, Jame Bond and plenty of other action films. Will raise a few laughs but not the best spoof around.
Leslie nielson is brilliant in every one of his films and i am not gonna say i dont like a single one of them because they are so funny.
One of Nielsen's better spoofs outside of Naked Gun, a great take on James Bond, though Austin Powers later does it better.
If I could give this film no stars I would. One of the worst films I have ever seen. I laughed once during the credits and that was it. Its atrocious.
While with a few good moments, this movie is fairly bland and relies on Leslie Nielsen doing his Leslie Nielsen thing. Relatively poor show as far as agent movie parodies go.
Agent Steve Bishop: Sir, we have intercepted a disturbing video on the rock of gabraltar.
The Director: Well, what is it?
Agent Steve Bishop: It's this really big rock sticking out of the water on the south coast of Spain.
It's not enough to meticulously re-create moments from other movies. That's not parody -- you have to actually put some jokes in there.
I'm not a big Bond fan, but that's exactly why I appreciated this movie so much. They hit on all the things that are just ridiculous about spy movies.
Oh this movie sucks so bad. I remember when I was little I used to love every Leslie Nielson thing going, but watching it again at this age is just an "OMG...how scary did I used to be?!" wake up. I'm sure the little tackers and the oldies will love it, just like me and my Grandma did.
