Meh! Crudup and Danes did great jobs, but there was something lacking. Only at the end, during the final scene of Othello did it gel for me. The highlight was Rupert Everett as Charles II
An unusual and highly watchable movie. Crudup turns in a great performance but is easily over-shadowed by the brilliant Claire Danes. The final scene, in which they perform 'Othello' together is one of my favourite movie moments ever!
I don't actually think any live show of Othello could ever top the ending Danes and Crudup produced at the end of this film, it was unbelievably amazing, and had me on the edge of my seat despite the fact I already know the ending of the play!
Danes and Crudup, apart from being outstanding at expressing the pain and struggle both characters were going through, had the most amazing chemistry together.
The honest look at the politics and struggle surrounding both male and female performers of that time was amazing, while you feel for Kynaston and the loss of, well everything he thinks defines himself, you also feel for Maria as she tries so hard to make a name for herself on ablilty, rather than the fact she was 'the first of her kind'.
The lovestory was also told beautifully, amazing acting on Danes' part really helped bring it to life. The ending was spot on, not giving the viewer a proper sense of closure, but rather letting them decided what happened to the two of them, their future, their relationship, etc, was definalty the right way to leave it.
My final point, whoever thought to cast Rupert Everett as Charles II was a genuis, I don't think anyone more perfect could have been cast!
Really very good --- I liked the cinematography and the performances were, for the most part, believable...even if it is a bit of a stretch to have someone as manly-looking as Billy Crudup play someone who was considered to be the most beautiful woman on stage at the time.
great film, great acting, I was stunned and surprised. I did not know what Billy Crudup had in him until I saw this. He is a really great underappreciated actor.
This was very clever where women could not be on the stage and how one mans jealousy. Slowly transitions to love and acceptance. A nice period piece with a heartful story.
I caught this movie late and regretted that fact immediately - a stunning piece and a very powerfulm performance by Claire Danes! I liked the intricasies of the storyline and how developed the characters were especially how limted Kynaston became after the ruling. A great movie that needs to get a lot more attention.
Concerned with the end of the Renaissance and the period of Restoration in the history of English theatre. Only fans of these topics will appreciate it.
Je ne sais pas pk mais j'ai beaucoup aimé ce film...il faut dire que les films d'époques m'attire particulièrement...époque shakerspearienne sont un touché automatique pour moi...
I love this movie... Good performances, interesting story, beautiful Billy Crudup, and a wonderful Rupert Everett! It didn't do as well at the box office as it should have done, but I hope it'll become well known on DVD and get all cool and 'culty'. It's the only movie I've ever seen at the cinema twice! Really worth checking out, I reckon, but it helps if you like period dramas and love stories.
this movie has one of the most amazing scenes i've ever seen. Billy Crudup should have recieved an oscar for his portrail of edward kyniston. he stirrs the emotions to an amazing level.
