Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, an alien place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers. Over his wife's numerous objections, a man rises in the dead of night: he's a stalker, one of a handful wh...( read more

A Russian surrealist film-noir, which ambles along a path somewhere between imagination and repression.
Still not quite sure what to make of the film but I think I like it.
I hated this movie so much. I can appreciate Takovsky trying to make us all aware of times passing, but we shouldn't be looking down at our watches either. The underground sets are interesting. I can appreciate the prophetic nature of the piece set y...(read more)ears before Chernobyl, but it was a needlessly long film about faith.
I was really excited to watch this (I liked "Solaris", and appreciated "Andrei Rublev" til I fell alseep), but this just didn't give back what it asks of it's audience. It still sticks in my head, and though I can appreciate it in memory it's one of the most unenjoyable experiences Ive ever actually watching a movie.
I dont' dislike this film because I don't get the intent, I just think the movie still would have made sense, maintained it's mystery, with an hour or so removed. The slow aesthetics of the film just don't suite the material here. Dissapointing.
Masterpiece, somewhat slow and long but such a beautiful Movie, just awesome.
Its not Advisable for Hollywood americans, neither for Action seekers.
The movie is very Deep, Genial & Artistic.
Tarkovsky was a genius on relating with movies, he showed the rest of the world that cinematography isn't just a means of entertainment, but also a new art of expression.
I hope Mr Hellshocked is happy now :)
A splendid film. The early part of the film is fantastic and has this hypnotic, stoner effect, where the images and dialogue exist to make you twirl in your mind. I love the the entire mood of the film, of wandering of wanting something of proving something, of human foibles and frailties, it was a film of discovery and it had a very severe effect in tis display.
There it is, a great sci-fi film with no special effects at all. Beautifully shot, with some of the most amazing face-frames since Ingmar Bergman's Persona. I also loved the way most of the movie, the characters are seen from behind. Slow-paced, but that's what makes it a beautiful film, with amazing scenes.
Tarkovsky's masterwork of science fiction is a must see for fans of the genre.
This dark highly atmospheric film is photographically on par with any Bergman or Kubrick film.
ilk seyredisimde yarisinda uyuyakaldim. ikinci seyredisimde hicbisey anlamadim. ucuncu seyredisimde film sonunda ben bu filmi nasil oldu da 3 defa seyrettim diye sastim kaldim.hic guzel degil ama harika bi film. oyle bisey iste.
One of the (if not THE) greatest science fiction film I've ever seen. Patient and meditative yet thrilling and innovative. Tarkovsky has yet to dissapoint me and I consider this effective film to be his masterpiece. That tunnel scene had me on the edge of my seat!
Best script ever. Usually philosophical scripts feel so forced and unrealistic. Here, the conversations feel so authentic, and it is very well-written. The acting was flawless. The cinematography was perfect. The story isn't exactly complete or everything I hoped for, but besides that, this movie is flat-out perfect. This is an absolute must-see for anyone who likes the art of film.
Saw this once many moons ago, and it made absolutely no sense to me. But I've grown both as a person and as a film viewer since then, so I want to give it another chance.
An incredible metaphysical and religious sci-fi masterpiece. One of the most visually stunning films, right up there with The Conformist and Days of Heaven in the use of color and nature.
Weird movie. It was like staring at a campfire. I could watch it for hours even though nothing really happened.
That was one of the most beautiful, strange and quite honestly unnerving films I have ever seen.
I almost feel sacrilege in saying that thus nay be a better science fiction film than 2001...
Well, first of all, the photography of this film puts pretty well everyone else to shame... It makes Children of Men look like a home movie...
The long takes, the constant beautiful long takes are beautiful and entirely nerve-wrecking at the same time.
The story and characters are impressive and impressively real for a movie as strange as this.
What's more, I believe the sound editing of this film is arguably THE BEST in any movie I've ever seen (or listened to, for that matter. Heh.)
Thank you, Andrei.
beautiful and strange. maybe the strangest thing i've ever seen. i'm going to have to watch this 900 more times before i'll be capable of taking it all in.
The best photographer of the cinema history! the scenes are fabulous. each object is it's own and unique position, and can't be moved for a better place.
One of the greatest avant-garde sci-fi films ever made. It draws you into its world with such mystery and haunting imagery. Impossible to forget.
Is the Zone the work of aliens, a living thing in and of itself, or an extension of God?
Three men attempt to figure this out as they venture into the heart of it to find The Room that is believed to grant wishes of any kind. Leading the hopeless on this quest is the Stalker's profession.
A burned out writer who once dreamed of changing humanity with his prose but now hates how his art is received and dreads his profession; a scientist who not only doesn't believe in anything, but doesn't even consider the question and intends to destroy the Zone to prevent the wrong kind of people from making wishes; and their guide, the Stalker, who fears and respects the Zone's many rules and intricacies and is constantly in conflict with his human cargo as he leads them to their destination.
The film makes heavy use of slow image and sound to let the viewer begin to feel every rock and tree on screen and become one with the Zone. There are no flashy montages but more natural long takes that give you a more human perspective. Through out the film, you never see any 'traps', and yet there's a constant fear and dread in the otherwise ordinary surroundings. The three characters' constant bickering and philosophizing is at first aimed at the mysteries of the Zone, but soon focuses on their entire lives, their purposes and futures, and it becomes clear what they may wish for though they never speak it.
They don't discover any true answers, but in the end they don't feel the need to ask.
Their final acts at The Room speak volumes on the potential they possess already, without any need for devine aid.
Stalker is a very spiritual film, but even as an Atheist I found it very aproachable and rewarding.
Just watched Stalker. The movie is a frightening journey of discovery for three desperate men, all braving the deadly Zone, to gain access to the Wish granting room.
Well, the Zone in the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is not a meteor or UFO crash site, but the real incident at Chernobyl. One can see how many things were lifted from this movie in the production of the game, almost as homage to the great film of 7 years before the incident at Chernobyl. One could juxtapose the event at Chernobyl with what this movie shows in its long, sweeping shots. Ruined habitations, desolate and overgrown forests, etc.
The stalker in the movie uses bolts on strings to test the environment of the Zone which contain deadly traps and in the game you have bolts to test the various anomaly's that surround the zone, that you can't always see. The whirlwind anomaly was portrayed just as the game portrays it.
Great film, haunting soundtrack and great dialogue between the various lost souls seeking salvation from the wish granting room. Well worth a watch.
Tarkovsky's slow lethargic pace may be hard to swallow, but no doubt the story, existentialist and fascinating, compensates the rest. A film so difficult to watch that it gets us immerse into "the zone" a deceitful landscape where we can't step forward without thinking twice.
Referenced in the Bjork song, "The Dull Flame of Desire", Tarkovsky's sci-fi masterpiece is a fascinating and compelling art film!
