A smart, solid, dramatic heist film with meaty, realistic characters and a wicked story line. Well worth the watch, especially because it has brains and is set in South Africa and not a generic Western country. Thomas Jane is the new MAN!
stander is a a true story based on a cop who would rob banks in his lunch time and thomas jane who is one of my fav actors is perfect for the role and is great, this is just one great movie.
the acting is awsome in this movie, thomas jane just was awsome and he did the best job for the lead of the movie, David o'hara was great so was dexter fletcher.
Stander" is based on the true story of André Stander, a South African homicide/robbery police captain who became one of the most notorious bank robbers in the country. After participating in the brutal killing in a riot in the line of duty, Stander decided to defy the very system he was part of, and set off on an audacious crime spree; robbing banks during his lunch hour then returning to the scene of the crime to lead the investigation. Finally, caught by the same police force he worked with, he was jailed and, subsequently befriended Allan Heyl and Lee McCall. After a daring jailbreak, the 'Stander Gang' committed a large number of robberies, which grew increasingly bold over time. In the eyes of the public, their blatant disregard for authority made them South Africa's most popular anti-heroes. In reality, however, Stander and his gang were the most wanted men in the country.
so is this movie any good and it is, the acting is awsome and the story is great, everything about this movie is great and even its a true life thing is just a great thing, just a great ,ovie.
so is anything bad about this movie ony the start is drags a bot but beide that this is just a great movie.
overall this movie should be watched one of the best bank robbers life turned into a movie is just great you just should watch this movie a cop as a robber called stander just take a watch at this movie.
This has to be one of the best "unknown" movies I have ever seen. Based on a true story "Stander" deliver the goods in all terms.
Why it wasn't released at the cinemas. I have no idea. But this movie needs your time and money, because it is that good. Really. You should not rent this movie, you should, like me, BUY it!

Just a surprisingly good, tight, lean movie. Brilliant picture. More proof that women need to direct more movies and experiment with new things! Great stuff and Thomas Jane's finest for the moment.
Some Movies are just forgotten. I liked this Movie its based upon a true story. And Thomas Jane pulled the character of Andre Stander really good. I nearly felt sorry for the Person himself. But well thats my Opinion. In South Africa he was a secret Hero in media
I bought this sight-unseen and turned out to really like it. Deborah Kara Unger can't really pull of the South Afircan accent, but otherwise this movie is areally good. I just wish it didn't end on such a down note. Oh well. It was still really good, and was peppered with humour.
Briliant movie about the true Story of the Stander Robbery Gang, Andre Stander was a Police Captain for the South African Police Force in the 80's who together with his Stander Gang fooled the world while robbing the banks of South Africa, Standers brilliance allways took him out of the crime scene as he himself would after hitting a bank turn up at the crime scene to investigate it..Magnificently shot in and around South Africa starring " The Punishers Thomas Jane and alot of well know South African Actors who play smaller roles in the movie..
An enjoyable movie but just didnt seem to capture the times or the way Stander went about his life. It seemed to be a brush over of the story and even the details didnt seem to capture enough. A good movie non the less based on a really good story.
Good movie about lawman Andre Stander who gave up his life of civil service to become one of South Africa's most successful bank robbers. Jane gives a solid performance in the title role. It's hard to believe how easy he was able to walk right in and out of the banks without anyone realising it (except the cashier).
Thomas Jane gives his best performance as Andre Stander, an South African police captian who gave it up to become a bank robber. The story would be hard to believe if wasn't based on a true story! A solid supporting cast and direction round out this really good film.
Tom Jane is brilliant. A true movie star performance. It's a slick, stylish and highly entertaining crime drama. Driven by a hip soundtrack and great action. One cool and compelling bank robbing thriller.
A heist bank robbery action comedy drama set against Apartheid South Africa. The film has a sense of fun and mischief, while handling the (real) story and drama very well. And Thomas Jane can actually act! Probably one of the best direct to video films ever.
he isn't really shown very often in the movie as a cop actually, and is discovered to be a criminal early in the movie by another officer - a former friend of his.
the bankrobbers in the movie are very cool, smooth, and stylish.
though the kind of movie seems to be done a fair bit, i'd recommend this particular one, even though it lacked a bit of something for me.
The preview and the box look bad, but this movie is really brilliant. It's not a subject I would normally be interested in but this movie really grabs you and is just all around good.
A stand-out performance by Tom Jane, in one of the better true-crime flicks of recent memory. A cop and a robber, Andre Stander would rob banks in disguise, and question the witnesses later that day. The heists are great fun, and the movie paints an honest portrait of a man who started out fighting the Apartheid, but lost himself in the high-risk high-reward thrills of bank robbery.
