By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Forty-one years after they played their first note an a Motown record and three decades since they were all together, the Funk Brothers reunited back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story. The Funk Brothers story is told through archival footage and still photos, narration, interviews, re-creation scenes, 20 Motown master tracks, and twelve new live performances of Motown classics with the Funk Brothers backing up Chaka Kahn, Ben Harper, Bootsy Collins, Montel Jordan, Meshell Ndegeocello, Joan Osborne, and Gerald Levert.

partially interesting near the start when you find out that these chaps have been playing the instruments in most of the motown songs you'll of heard or know, but quickly goes downhill as the stories they have to tell are almost non events and there's plainly too much yapping wit...( read more)h not enough music/singing. the other fault is that when the performing does come along it's not very accessible. the only artist i enjoyed watching was ben harper and he only sung other peoples songs. a big NO NO!

An excellent documentary about the Funk Brothers. What, you've never heard of them? Unfortunately, most people haven't either, despite the fact that they played on nearly every single Motown song ever recorded. Together, they've played on more number one hits than the Beatles, El...( read more)vis, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones combined. This documentary finally sheds some light on these fantastic musicians (several of whom have unfortunately passed on) and does so expertly, resulting in an immensely entertaining film experience. Highly recommended.

Fantastic documentary about a group of unknown musicians, self-named The Funk brothers who were the musical force behind so many of the Motown classics; partnering Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson... name a hit, and chances are, they were playing on it. ...( read more)Narrated by Andre Braugher, the film for the most part keeps him in the background and lets the musicians speak for themselves, and they do in a series of gentle stories and anecdotes. mixed with sadness about the musicians they lost along the way. The reminiscing is interleaved with a recent reunion concert where, if you weren't convinced so far, they prove once again that their contribution to the Motown sound was priceless. If you're a fan of the music already, this is a must-see.

The music is inspirational with the beats every bit of it contagious but the documentary film-making was dull and ineffective. This is the case where the music and soundtrack spoke through the screen but leaves little for the visuals and storytelling.

Great documentary...never knew the details about any of that stuff...

Could have done without Joan Freakin' Osbourne mangling some of the songs...

This is so good. It is a blessing that this movie was made at all. I cannot bear to think what might have been lost if it hadn't. Man oh man.
