While I fear the audience is slowly getting tired of fantasy films after books this is another highlight of the genre. While the first half of the movie feels somewhat bumpy in direction and editing at times, the rest is pretty perfect (I am saying this without having read the bo...( read more)ok, mind you). Sure, not every joke works as good as the many really great ones (special points to Robert DeNiro and Ricky Gervais), and not all effects look as good as the neat camera rides and gorgeous landscape shots. But newbie Charlie Cox makes for a really charming and likable main character, there is plenty of magic, fun and humor, a good soundtrack and a pretty exciting showdown as well as great villains. You have to admire Michelle Pfeiffer for her guts to ridicule the beauty mania and ageism she became a victim of in Hollywood. Very lovable and satisfying all around. Maybe even for the new millennium what Princess Bride was for the 80s.

I just watched this fro what had to be the 3000 time. I absolutely love this movie. From top to bottom a great cast, awesome acting, a great Neil Gaiman story backing immensely satisfying visuals. Absorbing fantasy about a young man in search of a fallen star he promises to bring back to win the heart of his true love. Jane Goldman & Matthew Vaughn's script is breathtaking in its ability to masterfully weave multiple storylines in creating an otherworldly universe that wil...( read more)l delight, amuse and enchant.

This is very strange indeed, I gotta be honest, I didn't follow the plot atall haha I lost it not far in, and the film is waaay too long, boring Im afraid. There's a great cast but thats it, the plot is confusing, the effects are basic and it all seems very much like 'The Adventu...( read more)res of Baron Muchausen'. It tries too hard and seems like they're just trying to get as many big names in the film as possible, overated.

Boy I feel like a real curmudgeon years before I'm eligible by not giving 'Stardust' a recommendation. This movie has its heart in the right place, but the mythos its based on seems gaunt. A magic world within England separated by a 4 foot high stone wall? Maybe director Matth...( read more)ew Vaughn's to blame for the lack of wonder by streamlining the book source material. Claire Danes falls into this kingdom after getting knocked out of orbit by a necklace - yes, a necklace! Did I mention she is a star? Not as in movie star, but a star in the sky star. If you're startled or amazed by that revelation, then you're more agog than the 19th century shopboy who crosses her path. And that's a big problem with the mood of this film: witches and unicorns and flying ships do little to shake the shopboy, the 'normal' person we as an audience are supposed to identify with as an outsider in this strange world. Yet if he's not fazed by turning into a mouse and back again, why should we be? I've heard comparisons to 'The Princess Bride' and maybe that's the kind of fantasy they were striving for, but lacks that classic's charm and humor. Oh there's charm and humor here too, but in a poor man's 'Princess Bride' sort of way.
