Although this film starts off relatively well, grabbing viewers' interest and setting up the situation nicely, it does not take long before the film becomes nothing more than mediocre filler for a prime-time spot; what could have--should have--been a terrifying and freaky story soon becomes an eye-roller of the most predictable sort. However, this should not have been the case. Ron Perlman's acting is superb, and he does, at first, enable the casual viewer to get slightly uncomfortable. Tom Skerrit is also excellent, although to see him play something other than "the bad guy" is something certain viewers may have difficulty getting used to.
"Desperation" is a film that is trying to be scary while simultaneously being conservative and mainstream and trying not to offend at the same time. Stephen King just does not belong on prime-time, not, that is, if the intention is to scare and disturb.
This was a marvelous suspense flick. I won't call it scary necessarily, but definitely edge-of-seat. Everything was full of dead people, and it was awesome!
It started out promising, but like so many of Stephen King's "Made for T.V." films, it lacks the freedom to be as scary as it could be. Ron Perlman was fairly good in this though.
Worst Stephen King movie ever..! Even worse than I.T! Too much religious B.S in this and extremely long movie with TERRIBLE acting. If your going to watch this I suggest a drinking game of everytime somebody says God or Tak.
Love it Mick Garris Rocks... You should also check out Valerie on the stairs about a storyline that comes to life Tony Todd plays a demon. Valerie on the stairs is not on flixster for some weird reason.
El unico, pero demasiado grande como para pasarlo por alto, defecto que tiene es el niño. No ha tenido ni 3 dialogos cuando uno ya esta deseando que Ron Perlman llegue y lo calle a balazos.
Stephen King would've been very proud of this adaptation of his book? well he wrote the tele-play so he should be. In any case, it is a great adaptatio of the book. It follows the plot lines very closely & only had some minor trips down the side-trail that I could remember. I probably would've chosen a better David but he was ok I guess. Ron Perlman was fantastic in his role as the sheriff! Kudos to him for bringing to life exactly what I imagined. Tom Skerritt was ok & the rest of the crew carried their own? so the characters were a little 2 dimensional but the plot was enough to carry the rest of the film. But the God messages in it could turn a few folk off the film? you were warned.
The book by Stephen King is one of my favorites (despite being sometimes off-puttingly religious in a "The Stand" / good vs. evil way) - but this adaptation has only had bad reviews and the 'unrated' trailer forced at the beginning of a recent DVD rental was enough to stop me from seeking this out. I'll wait for it to inevitably show up on Five at 1:30 in the morning when I can't sleep, and then watch it.
The movie I like cause it is from the book by stephen king but if you watch the movie and read the book, you will like the book more, I promise you that
Fine horror made-in-TV adapted by Stephen King about the town becomes hell with the demon-possessed in the human beings. I'm very impressived for Tom Skerritt, Annabeth Gish and a young boy made their own great encourage to fight their own lives against evil.
It wasn't that bad, however a lot of the "mood" that was created in the book was completely missed...if you're a fan of the book you may be disapointed.
As is the case with most Stephen King adaptations Desperation starts extremely well but as it proceeds past the 1 hour mark plotting becomes increasingly clumsy. I also found some of the characterization irritating such as the preachy, exaggeratedly god loving child who is given some truly unremarkable dialogue. Despite this, Desperation isn?t without it?s tense moments, most of these scenes come from Ron Perlman?s deranged, quite obviously possessed sheriff who singlehandedly arrests as many people from the highway he can find and transports them back to Desperation, Nevada the deserted corpse-ridden hellhole and deposits each one of them in the jail cell. We later find out that the sheriff is under the spell of ?Tak? an ancient ?evil? that is capable of hosting bodies and is hell-bent on exacting murderous ?revenge?. Slightly corny it may be but generally it is the foundation for what is for the most part a very entertaining film anchored by Perlman?s wildly psychotic and ferociously inhuman performance.
As in most cases, the book was better although it wasn't one of my favorites. Ron Perlman is the only one really worth mentioning. Steven Weber does good, but whoever played Ellen was so annoying.
Love all King realted stuff. This is actually part of another story, The Regulators, and it was done very well...totally got into it and this is highly recommended
I wasn't aware that this was a tv adaptation of a Stephen King's novel when I watched it but it sure didn't looked like one. Its quality is better than many movies made for the theaters out there. I haven't read the novel but the plot was good.
The concept is good but the story behind the evil identity "Tak" is not very well explained and that makes some understanding of the events a little impossible.
On the positive side, Desperation offers us a desolated and creepy atmosphere which contributes to the development of high tension. Plus, the cast was well chosen. I liked especially of the performance of the young actor Shane Haboucha.
It's better if you read the book than seeing the movie. It is the same as the book, but my imagination had better spookyness, eeriness, and suspense than the movie. Stephen King has a lot more suspense than the movie.
It was such a stupid story, particularly the whole god angle. The kid was so overly-earnest, obnoxious and preachy, and the acting was really terrible by everyone. Like a lot of Stephen King films it suffered from poor production.
I totally dug the books - and the standard cliche applies here about books to film. It lacks something the books drove into you. However, if you walked into this without knowing the reading material behind it you would be entertained.
i read the book and always ssaw it as being the most kick ass horror movie ever...and then I saw half of this.... I (underlined) I!!! could do a better job!
