As a huge fan of the series, I really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, it's just a dumbed down version of the show. Replacing the actors who played Orlando and Derrick was a terrible idea, and the continuity errors border on insulting to the people who were fans of the show. The funniest lines were taken directly from the series, and the plot left a lot to be desired.
If you haven't already, go watch the series. Instead of being condensed to fit in an hour-and-a-half movie timeslot, each character is able to shine in their own lovely demented way.
a crazy and weird movie, but I took a chance and watched this movie one night and it was ok, not the best, but ok......I would rate this movie an E......for effort......please do not take candy from strangers.....smile
I liked the idea of the movie, it was okay i guess but I could barely laugh at any of the jokes, it wasn't funny enough and off putting seeing a 46yr old wanting to sleep with a teenager.
Kind of like a best of album for the show, all the best routines and gags are here. If you can get your hands on the series watch it, unlike Reno 911 were the movie is an extension of (and better than) the series, this is the entire series condensed to an hour and half.
Though there's alot of recycled material theres a fair amount of new jokes as well.
In any event its still one of the funniest comedies in recent memory. Amy Sedaris is brilliant, and Stephen Colbert is great to watch here as well.
My only real complaint is the dance sequence in the credits is kinda simple(the dance sequences at the end of each episode used to be one of the best parts of the show). Sans that, this was great.
"Hello, I'm Jerri Blank and - and I'm an alcoholic. I'm also addicted to amphetamines as well as main line narcotics. Some people say I have a sex addiction, but I think all those years of prostitution was just a means to feed my ravenous hunger for heroin. It's kinda like the chicken or the nugget. The point is, I'm addicted to gambling. Thank you."
I've never seen the skit that this is based on, but if you can put yourself into the mindscape of the world these characters live in, it's a really fun film with some really hilarious moments, particularly when it comes to Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris' performances.
I like this kind of movie humor. Jerry Balnk is a hilarious 40 year old who goes back to HS. Of course nobody would like her lol. Def not for the kiddies I was sick when I watched it but it still made me bust up I give it 3 1/2 stars check it out for a good laugh!
i liked it and even though i expected more for a plot than a science fair i thought it was completely hilarious!\ i'm a big huge fan of the show...and the big downfall of the movie is the fact that they didn't really step up the game to make it an actually good film! it seemed like a super extended version of another episode! nothing more nothing less!
so basically if your a fan of the show you'll enjoy watching the movie.
Very funny, great actors, especially Stephen Colbert, I loved his character. The main character was a bit extreme at times, but overall, the movie was fun to watch.
I never thought I'd say this about a comedy based on a TV show, but this movie looks hilarious and I really want to see it. If anything, Stephen Colbert has a supporting role. As far as I'm concerned if he thinks it's funny enough to be in, that makes it worthy of at least a rental.
'Strangers with Candy' based off the deliciously neurotic Comedy Central original series by the same name, is filled with such ingeniously funny moments. Too bad that's all they are -- moments. 'Strangers with Candy' had so much potential, but it just isn't consistently funny enough. 'Strangers with Candy' is a mixed bag in many respects.
First off, Amy Sedaris is absolutely hysterical! Just her body language as the 40-year-old reformed drug addict who goes back to high school, is enough to make you roll on the floor laughing. The rest of the cast including the wide array of cameos from Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman to Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker as the school's unsympathetic grief counselor who charges the students in tips, is decent to say the least. The real scene-stealer is Stephen Colbert as the closet-gay creationist science teacher who is just flat-out strange.
The real problem with 'Strangers with Candy' lies in the screenplay. It has some incredibly funny moments like I've previously mentioned, but it has such long stretches of time where nothing funny happens. Calling 'Strangers with Candy' off-beat is like calling the bombing of Hiroshima violent, it's an understatement of gigantic proportions. If you are into that sort of off-beat comedy films, chances are you'll love 'Strangers with Candy.' But for someone like me expecting something with a bit more substance and guffaws, I was pretty damn disappointed. Grade: C+
This is one of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen, and for that reason I think everyone should see it! Some times it was laugh out loud funny, and other times I was peering through my fingers in a 'what were you thinking?' kind of way! Whatever you think of it. It's definitely original!!
The story was pretty weak but it was funny. I remember the tv show use to be on after south park years ago pretty weird show. Stephen Colbert was halrious.
I would see the show on Comedy Central, and those were funny. This one fell short of that, by a lot. Jeri's stupidity and attraction to women is funny, but using the same lines time and time again to a half-assed character... lame. With the help of the star cast, ie.. Sarah Jessica Parker with her husband, Matthew Broderick, the one guy that's friends with Ben Stiller in "Along Came Polly", obviously were placed in for the peak of interest that lasted about 5 minutes. I watched the entire movie b/c I had to know what happened with the whole "science fair" bit, and then, when it ends, it's like "What the hell?" A TV show that just wasn't ready to head to the big screen, or DVD release.
