It's okay at best, but the second half is really quite boring which is a shame because there was potential. The acting is very good and I guess there's just something about German cinema which makes it unhateable in my eyes. The plot does nothing for me but it has some funny moments and likeable characters...
Not a fan of movies about closeted gays who don't think they're gay. In the words of Carlos Mencia, if you think that you're gay then you're gay!
I rowed for five years in high school, and was on the rowing team when I came out of the closet at seventeen. That being said, when I heard about this movie, I felt an obligation to see it. That being said, I never had a crush on a straight best friend (at least not to the extent Tobi had with Achim). I found it difficult to watch some of the more uncomfortable and awkward moments, because they brought back some memories I don't care to often think about. There's some really strong characters in this movie, and the story played out well (at times somewhat cliche). I would have liked to see a bit more on the rowing aspect, have that tied into the meaning of the plot. Why choose rowing and not really use it aside from having it be the one thing everyone has in common. Maybe it's the American "I-Must-Win-Everything' gene that I've got embedded in me, but I took rowing a hell of a lot more seriously than these kids. My whole team did. I just thought that the sport, and the teamwork involved, could have been tied into the theme a bit better. Had a positive ending, and is an overall good film.
Another great German movie dealing with growing up and understanding who you are. All the actors portraying the teenage rowers did really well and made feel like you might actually personally know them. Great movie.
"they have helped their team win several rowing cups..."
Rowing cups? Seriously?
...
Hmm.... rowing cups.... o.O"
It was an excelent comming out film. The interaction with his straight friend really lent it a lot more credibility than many of the others I've seen, and more importantly, it was believable.
Great film. Has some visually brilliant shots and awsomely moving scenes. A great tale of two best friends both struggleing with growing up and becoming the people we are meant to be.
So it's your pretty standard coming out story...but this film is wonderfully shot and contains a very well acted cast.
Good story. English subtitles are a distraction, but necessary. Being gay is harder when it's your "terrible secret".
Excellent movie. About a young man named Tobi dealing with his sexuality, coming out of the closet and his deep feelings for his best friend Achim. Very heart-warming movie. It will really touch all gay people who've had to deal with this. The movie is in German and has English subtitles.
SOMMERSTURM is the kind of movie that everyone - and I mean everyone (except for small children) - should watch, not only because it's a wonderful movie and great fun, but specially because it treats the subject of homosexuality in a natural, sensible and incredibly mature manner. For those who still have some prejudice towards different sexual orientations, it's a soft learning lesson... It can help straight kids to better understand what it's like to grow up gay. And it can help gay kids to develop self-confidence and pride. That is so authentic and honest, really it was nearly like a documentary, you really feel like being there as well. It's one of the rare film in which everything fits together, the acting, the music, the dramatic art, the fun, the dialogs.
The sex-scene, where Tobi loses his virginity with Leo, is played in a very straightforward way. Unlike what you see in many other movies, it is not corny but quite down-to-earth with its suddenness and banality. The rest of the cast also did a great job and apparently put their hearts into the film.
After a long time on my 'Want to See' List I can finally say that I managed to watch it!!
The film's plot is simple yet I found it very moving. The choice of music is excellent and some of the nature shots were visually brilliant. This film tells the story between 2 best friends. They are both in the same rowing team and when they sail off to a championship they meet (amongst others) a rowing team called 'Queerschlag' that was made up of gay members only. Despite the differences between the two teams they end up spending most of their time together and in the process one of the 'straight' boys discovers himself. He is in love with his best friend, who already has a girlfriend. He is heartbroken but soon finds love in the other rowing team!
A sweet story, nice camera-work and cinematography, great setting, nice idea and generally worth watching if you're not a homophobe!
Recommended.
Fantastic movie. One of the best gay films ever made. I can really relate to this one as I am sure thousands of others could. Perfection.
Kind of light movie, I spect more action from the characters (you know what I mean) It is a fast movie by the way and it didn't leave any kind of message. I was expecting more of this movie but it dissapoint me.
Waste of TIME!! Very Weak movie, DO NOT WATCH, if you do end up watching it, side effects may include: Suicide, murder ramapages, road ramapage, any kinds of ways of harming yourself, and many others...
one of the best gay themed movie ive ever seen. the sexual scenes arent even explicit.. they're really sweet and the cinematography and direction of photography is SUPERB.
Goodlooking, but other than the homosexuality aspect it's a pretty average coming-of-age film. Some truthful observations get clouded by the over-the-top feel of other scenes. "Beautiful Thing" and "Get Real" are better films dealing with similiar issues.
