Much better the way it was before with the additional Rochard Lester footage. Of course, I am biased since I grew up on it.

This new "Director's Cut" of Superman II is very clever, story-wise. It does change things from the original version, for the better. However, some of the intercuts of audition material is noticeable, which is a little distracting. But while I loved the original 1980 version, this is way better!

Following the death of Christopher Reeve, this film was remade to include the original vision of director Richard Donner. Lester's mildly entertaining sequel (released in '81) is improved while adding more scenes for seamless continuity.
The humour, character development and action scenes all pack darkly-themed excitement. While many of the scenes were originally filmed by Lester, Donner's cut includes better action, additional workprints, and scaled special effects.
Although the executive producers of Cannon Films (Salkinds) turned the next 2 'Superman' films (III & IV) into weaker-budgeted farcical failures, Bryan Singer's 'Superman Returns' continues where this film concludes. Watch this revision to fully appreciate the brilliant veteran acting talents of Reeve and Brando.
If you believe that this film franchise is terribly weak, you ought to watch both Donner films followed by Singer's most recent and upcoming features. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

The way this film should have been done, without all the powers that have never been used for superman before or after.

Parts of it are better, but because of its insistence on using alternate takes of material from the theatrical cut, parts that worked BRILLIANTLY last time flop here ("Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it?" or "Haven't you ever heard of freedom of the press?"). Still, the new material- particularly Superman slamming into the Statue of Liberty and Zod gleefully blowing soldiers away with an AK-47- make the whole thing worth it on so many levels!

MUCH better than the horrid attempt that Richard Lester gave us. This film is the definition of two things - 1/ Why the Salkinds and Lester aren't making movies anymore, and 2/ How this series could have evolved into a truly epic, respectful film arch had the same cast and crew remained. If I had to sum up in one reason why this film is superior, then it would be this - the bullcrap magic and hocus-pocus of the Lester version is non-existant in this, and the film is strengthened ten fold even just from that.
