This movie was definitely better than what I imagined it would be. Brandon Routh makes the perfect Clark Kent/Superman for these movies. The effects were great, it actually looked real. This was by far one of the more realistic Superman movies.

Bryan Singer is a truly outstanding director. Not only did he gift us great comic-book flicks like X-Men 1 and 2, but with this film he also breathed new life into the whole Superman saga. Even though it's draggy at times, especially in some of its romantic scenes, there is a lot to love about this film. Besides having one of the coolest intros ever, it also includes a terrific cast and action scenes that are nothing short of thrilling and well-made. I can't wait to see what awaits us in "The Man of Steel", the sequel that is set for next year.

This Superman is a homage to the original Superman movie.

Great cast- Kevin Spacey is great as Lex Luthor, lovely visuals, and most importantly a great character piece.

This Superman has a lot of heart!

One of the best superhero movies I've seen. It had an interesting plot and fantastic special effects. My only disappointment in Brandon Routh, although handsome enough to play the Man of Steel, portrayed Superman in one of the most cardboard performances I've ever seen. Fortunately, he did a wonderfully dorky Clark Kent, which was hilarious.
However, with a line-up that includes Kevin Spacey and Frank Langella, even the best actors will have trouble going up against these two! Kevin Spacey nearly stole the show like Gene Hackman in the movies with Christopher Reeve. It was great to see Frank Langella in a non-evil role, but playing Perry White, he could still be gruff. He was perfect!
Then the ever-gorgeous James Marsden was a delight to watch. Cast as Mr. Lois Lane, his role could have descended into unbridled jealousy and been an asshole at his wife's affectations and obsession with Superman. Who wants to go up against the Kryptonian even in matters of the heart. But Marsden's role kept grounded and it was a treat to watch him. He's still a hero even when he's not Cyclops! :)
Kate Bosworth was rather lackluster as Lois Lane. She is no match for the formidable Margot Kidder, as a brilliant yet unorganized star reporter. Even the lines illustrating her inability to spell were delivered with better comedic timing than Bosworth.
When Superman rescues Lois's plane from crashing, Lois emerges from the wreck, after being thrown violently around the cabin, from one end to the next for several long minutes, looking like she was about to step out onto a runway (of the fashion type). Not a hair was out of place, her clothes unruffled and make up in tact. How's that for unbelievable?

Over all it was a great movie and a lot of fun! One to watch again and again. You'll never get tired of watching Superman saving the Space Shuttle and the 747!
    I'm glad he's returned!

Now I am a great fan of anything Superman. I'm also a huge comic book fan.

The reason why, in good judgement, I cannot rate this movie an all out 5 is because it missed so much that could have made it an epic movie.

To be honest I am more than happy to finally (after 20years) see the dude in blue jet across the big screen.

This movie focused way too much on the Lois and Superman issues than the main story arc.

Superman wasn't super in this movie.

I still have hope that the next one 'Man of Steel' could do better.

I wish we see the due in blue zoom by and kicking alien butts this time around.

Come on! Let him use some real Kryptonian powers, don't limit him too much!!!

Richard Donner's Superman is the template for all superhero movies that have come since. No one understands this better than the director of this movie Bryan Singer. The movie is basically a love letter to Richard Donner. It's made in the style of the 70's original. In terms of it's photography, story structure, and pacing. Perhaps that's why some people were disappointed with the film. It's a spectacle that showcases the hero and his abilities, instead of wall to wall fight scenes. But true to the Donner film (and his cut of Superman II), it's a spectacle unto itself. But no amount of spectacle has any meaning without characterization. Thankfully the movie is filled with talented actors who bring their own styles to already established characters. Kate Bosworth brings a good balance of strength and vulnerability to Lois Lane. Kevin Spacey has the lunatic flair of Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor, but brings more darkness to him. Frank Langella is quiet and stoic as Perry White. James Marsden makes for a surprisingly good character as Richard White, Lois' boyfriend. Caught in a love triangle with her and Superman, he could have made his character short sighted and spiteful when dealing with Superman's return, but instead makes him a stand up guy who comes through for the people he cares about. No superhero movie can be a real success if the actor portraying the title character is less than believable. For me, Christopher Reeve IS Superman. His portrayl is the stuff of legend, and could not possibly be equalled. However, newcomer Brandon Routh emobdies everything that made Reeve's Superman timeless. He doesn't mimic Reeve, he honors him. He brings forth all of Superman's strengths without ever sacrificing his humanity. He also conveys Superman's frustrations over trying to fit in to a world that has moved on without him, including finding a place in Lois' life again. He also shares the pain that Superman feels over always knowing that he can't possibly help all the people that cry out for him. But this is not a downer Superman. There's plenty of heroic feats to go around, including an airplane rescue that is as spectacular as any action scene in any superhero movie. Marred only by a final act that takes a bit to long to make its point, this is a spectacular entertainment, and one of the best superhero movies ever made.

a film of grand effects... not as emotional as the '78 movie, but the action enthralled the viewer with a feeling of wanting more

Some people like it. Some people hated it. I loved it! Bryan Singer did a great job! Brandon Routh did a excellent job as Superman. And Kevin Spacey played a great Lex Luthor.

It has a very BORING PLOT, I MEAN Superman gone for 5 years. Lois Lane has Superman's kid, come on they got married, for God's sake.

I dislike Superman, but after seeing the older Superman movies, this was a surprise. I expected this to take place in a more modern setting, but it seemed to pick up right where it left off. I thought Brandon Routh made a great Clark Kent/Superman. If you enjoy the prior Superman films, then this will most likely live up to your expectations. However, like I said, I am not a big Superman fan, so I gave it a 3.5

It's lighthearted, fast pased, and so good that it almost out passes 'Batman Begins'. Though it never did, it still is a comic book adaption that is well worth your time, considering I never liked Superman.

Bryan Singer left X Men so he wouldn't get blamed for X Men 3, but he did Superman Returns instead, a reboot where it appears it's an alternate timeline, and the other movies about 20 years earlier morphed into the present, and somehow Los Lane isn't lie, 50 with grandkids. To Superman, now Brandon Routh, only 6 years have passed, but it seems to the rest of Earth, clearly 20 years have, and Lois must in fact be her daughter, because it doesn't make sense. That is why it shouldn't get a higher rating. Why did they have to make it so connected to the others? They could have left out all the brooding stalker Superman stuff and the implications of the superboy. Arguably better than 3 or 4, but still lacking.

Just ok movie, but I was expecting a lot more. It relies too much on the original film and it's kinda slow. Brandon Routh is good as Superman/Clark Kent. Kevin Spacey is top notch as Lex Luthor. Kate Bosworth is better than I thought she would be as Lois Lane. The special effects are amazing. It's a little long and could have used more action. But the best reason to see this film is for Parker Posey. She definetly has the best scenes in the movie and the best lines like "Wow. That was really something Lex. It's like frigging Gone with the Wind". Priceless.

Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman! I admire the greatest superhero in the world who is both an American and world icon. Here is the fifth chapter of the "Superman" film series that still packs punches and is as powerful as steel after almost 20 years with the last four superheroic chapters, and it took a long time for filmmakers to revive its franchise. And they did.

Yes, Superman is back as a hero of the 21st century. During his five-year absence Superman was searching for Krypton, and things have already changed on his adopted home planet Earth. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane is currently engaged, has a son, and wrote the winning article "Why The World Doesn't Need Superman". The sunlight still brings Superman superpowers such as x-ray vision, superstrength, and the ability to fly. He's still as fast as a speeding bullet. And he is still invulnerable to all known dangers except the deadly, green-glowing Kryptonite. The moment Lex Luthor launches an evil plan that would kill billions of lives, Superman has to fight back while, as always, protecting for truth, justice, and the American Way. The great special effects (SFX) are plenty in all the action scenes, including these of the tumbling airplane and a continent showdown, and they still fly. What a great superhero movie, and I guess the world still needs its Superman.

Adapted from the DC Comics series by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel and directed by Bryan Singer, who also directed the first two "X-Men" movies, this 2006-released "Superman" film features the finest acting performances from the following cast members:
    1.) Brandon Routh (Clark Kent/Superman)
    2.) Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane)
    3.) Frank Langella (Perry White)
    4.) Sam Huntington (Jimmy Olsen)
    5.) James Marsden (Richard White)
    6.) Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor)
    7.) Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski)
    8.) Kal Penn (Stanford)
9.) Eva Marie Saint (Martha Kent)

The late Marlon Brando also delivers us with his posthumous appearance as Jor-El, still fresh from the first and original "Superman" film. The acting qualities of both Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey perfectly match those of their acting predecessors Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman, respectively.

The background instrumental music is so powerful that it reflects the mythical Superman hero. The main theme, still fresh from the last four "Superman" chapters, is in my head now, and I can hear it!

Whether you read comic books or not, go ahead and enjoy the fifth chapter of the "Superman" film series, highly recommended for all audiences.

Finally. A good Superman flick to follow Superman II.

After sitting in the theatre for half an hour, it finally starts. You see the DC logo, then you hear that unforgettable music, and then you see the Superman shield. Chills will run up and down your spine. But that wasn't the only time I got chills during this movie. The action scenes were just amazing. I even got a little teary eyed when Superman's saying to son what his father said to him.

Superman, Kal-El, Clark, call him as you please, has just returned to Earth after looking for his home planet for five years. Earth is in worse shape than ever and Superman does his best to make it better. While, of course, working at the Daily Planet. And doing his best with Lois. And learning he has a son. Oh, and dealing with Lex Luthor again. He has a lot on his plate.

I don't know who's better, Christopher Reeve or Brandon Routh. I like Routh better as Clark Kent because he seems a lot like all of the cute nerds out there. But I think I like Reeve better as Kal-El. I think Reeve really got the Superman charm out there.

The Lex Luthor is this movie is the comic book Lex Luthor. Kevin Spacey really captures the craziness and evilness of Luthor.

I thought I would be let down with Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, but I was wrong. She did better than I expected. I don't know how Lois can just let Superman go. I mean come on. It's Superman.

All in all, not as good as the original two but still worth seeing. I was not let down.

    very very bad!
I dont care what people say but this one was a big throw up, ridiculous!

Coming from a brilliant director as Bryan singer and big budget funds doesnt help to make this movie float.

    Dissapointment;
Clark Kent, Brandon routh sucks big time, really!
he is feminine, his body looks like bunch of buble wrap, etc.
    Kate bosworth was alright,
Keving spacey was good not brilliant like he always do, does he have British accent here?

other cast doesnt support it, i like Kal penn, but he is useless and doesnt match to any criteria.

    Direction;
Really lavish scenes, but doesnt put up to it.
    Last was the weak plot,
    SPOILERS:
    * Superman have a son??
    Seriously? wow..

Remake it again and make somebody who looks more like Clark kent, in my mind it's Tom welling. but well lets see.
I heard Superman 2 is on a green light, and the same star cast too? God mercy!

    5/10.

What a wasted opportunity to carry Superman boldly and triumphantly into the twenty-first century. Instead of rebooting the film franchise a la "Batman Begins", DC Comics and Warner Bros. made the misguided decision to keep us rooted, a full generation later, in the outdated world of the Christopher Reeve movies. Because DC Comics revamped Superman (along with all their other major characters) in the mid-1980s, everyone under age thirty has been raised on a different portrayal of Superman and his world than the one presented in this movie. Yes, Christopher Reeve was a great Superman, and yes, we're all sorry that he fell off that horse, and yes, we're all sorry that he's dead now, but Superman never began nor ended with Reeve. He was not the first actor to portray Superman, nor was he the last. It was time to move on, away from the goofy Clark Kent and the cheesy Lex Luthor and all the other outmoded antiquities from the 1970s, but did they? Noooo. Now, unless they decide to refresh the franchise the way Marvel did with the Hulk, we're going to be stuck with still more Superman movies that follow the same, obsolete pattern of this abysmal failure.

Good film. This is the only Superman film that I have watched and Batman Begins is the only Batman film that I have watched. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth are brilliant in this film. I cant really say that Christopher Reeves is terrible/good as Superman because I havent seen the others. The visual effects in this film are absolutely fantastic particularly the scene with the plane. I love Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I think there will be another film, as a sequel of this film.
