Because this production was filmed at the beginning of the '80s, the film and sound quality are good, but they're not great. Still, it's much of the original cast, and Angela Lansbury alone makes this worth watching. <p>This has been called Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, and I wouldn't disagree. For musicality, however, I'll take <i>A Little Night Music,</i> or even his integral part in <i>West Side Story</i> as evidence of his better work. There is nothing you'll hear here that you'll come away wanting to whistle or hum, I assure you.

HEY! this was like my favorite play in the world i have the video... ....I watched it and thought it was GREAT and funny if u compair movie and play performances it is SOOO DIFFERENT but i still loved it! ...I dint really like the guy who played Toby thou... but i still LOVE both the movie and play. .... THANKS H!

  Dark, Sinister, Macabre, no one portrays these qualities better than Johnny Depp- a man torn apart by vengeance. Too much blood and gory for my taste however.

That may have knocked one star off my overall rating, but it doesn't prevent Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece from being any less of a joy to watch.
