I have to say, I really wasn't impressed. For everyone telling me it was the best movie and all that, it was quite a disappointment. I've seen Tim Burton and Johnny Depp do a lot better. The acting was mediocre, especially for the ensemble they had and it looked like they were on...( read more) a stage the entire time. When it's Tim Burton, i've come to expect his sets to be something better.

Visualmente es excelente y los actores brillantes. El ambiente que se crea en la pelicula es genial. No me gustan los musicales en general pero esta pelicula es imperdible.

I really liked it, but how could a movie with Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter be bad?
  • November 15, 2009
A bit campy in parts but overall still a great movie to watch!! Absolutely loved Jamie Campbell Bower in this movie... hes a promising talent with much ahead of him in the industry!!
  • November 15, 2009
I usually love movies with Johnny Depp but i just couldnt get past the singing throughout this movie!! Got really irritating :(
  • November 13, 2009
This movie was so great because of the gore, cannabalism, and the darkness.

I got this move for Christmas one year because my mom knows I love Johnny Depp and would probably like it.

I loved the alfits, the looks and some of the songs and Johnny Depp has an awesome voice. Although i like the movie I think they could have done it better.

I used to find this movie incredibly irritating, but after a couple of rewatches - I've really started to enjoy it a lot more. The design of the movie is gothically beautiful, the attention to detail on the sets and cinematography is pretty much unparallelled by another film in S...( read more)weeney Todd's release year. Helena Bonham Carter is superb as Mrs Moony, and her rendition of "The Worst Pies in London" is the film's comic highlight. The movie has a well-crafted story, the majority of it told through song (not dialogue), and a couple of particularly devastating twists and turns in the final reel really upped the dramatic ante. Jamie Campbell Bower lets the movie down with his cheesy performance as the film's most grating character. The "I'll steeeeeal you, Johanna" song was horribly annoying and overplayed. His rushed relationship with Johanna was incredibly convenient (he saw her in the window and fell in love) but forgivable as it's almost a trademark of the musical genre by this point.

Overall, the film has really improved after a couple of rewatches. It's one I keep looking forward to seeing again now.

  • November 3, 2009
I like the music, I love the story, but sadly, it doesn't have a happy ending.
  • November 3, 2009
Dark and haunting, the music is beautiful. I like the way Depp portrays the character cos he looks really pscyhotic. Helena did a good job too! Definitely can't want for more Depp - Burton - B.Carter work!

not tim's best work.. but still great!
  • November 1, 2009
the best of both worlds! Tim Burton and Johnny Depp! Who could ask for anything more?!
  • October 31, 2009
Excellent thriller and although it was a musical, I kinda liked it. Prob did a bit much singing, but it was as expected. Is their anything Depp can't do? He was a fantastic singer in this. Bonham Carter looked very rootable the whole movie. Rickman was pretty bad ass as the villi...( read more)an. I also liked Baron Cohen's cameo, which really started some violent and gory scenes.

Sweeney Todd - Never Forget Never Forgive..

Base on the hit boardway musical from the wonderful Stephen Sondheim, taking to the ...( read more)big screen by the awesome Tim burton, comes a tale of Benjamin Barker/Sweeney Todd living a simply life as a barber with a wife Lucy and his daughter Johanna, when the lust of an evil judge throws all of their lives into chaos. Jugde Tupin has Benjamin Barker deported to Australia never to return again. Benjamin now under the Pseudonym of Sweeney Todd returns to england many years later with the help of young sailor Anthony Hope, hoping to be reunited with his wife and daughter and punish Judge Turpin and the society who destoryed his life with the help of Mrs. Lovett who had known Sweeney as Benjamin and his family all those years ago. Sweeney opens his old barber shop above Mrs.Lovett's Pie Shop were she sell"the worst pies in the London"to rid all the people who ever done him wrong..he disposes the body in Mrs.Lovett's pies in order to be reunited with his daughter Johanna, who is now in Judge Turpin's ward..

Sweeney Todd is one of the best musical i have seen and one hell of a great movie. This movie is all I could ever hope it would be, violent, thrilling, musical and comedic..seeing the other plays (Sweeney Todd (2006) and (Sweeney Todd in Concert 2001) and being a fan of the original Broadway stage versions i had no complaints..

    *********************************************************************************************

I get Three for the price of one great movie.. (Tim, Johnny and Helena..) plus the wonderful Alan Rickman this movie also has some great acting and singing from some newbees..
Johnny Depp performance was outstanding, sensational and is the perfect match for portraying the scheming, vengeance-obesessed barber Sweeney Todd..
Helena Bonham Carter is extraordinary.. she brings humor and a kind of pathos to her wonderfully wacky mrs.Lovett, she was absolutely perfect for this role (just as Depp was for Todd) and perfectly captures the love that Lovett has for Sweeney..
Alan Rickman was a slendid choice and is so deliciously evil without being over the top..remarkable, fabulously villainous mode and with Timothy Spall (who it just talented) made a great pair of evil doers..

    ********************************************************************************************

The Younger cast were good, Bower,Wisener, and Sanders are all very young and innocent, with angelic voices, and Sanders is a scene-stealer.. His song 'not while am around' may be one of the most poignant yet.. and the dramatic of his character feel exactly right up to the bitter end. Jamie and Jayne, respectively are refreshing winsome in thier roles.. they all show a bright career in the future...

    ********************************************************************************************
Cinematography is beautiful which set the dark and grim atmosphere of the tale of vengeance..The set-decoration, costumes, and make up were absolutely exquisite..a fresh tale of murder, vengeance, and implications of cannibalism.
the music was downright fantastic..although the cast are not known for thier singing abilities..they have done an excellent job at it..although some people like me may regret the loss of some clever Sondheim songs..
You see why Tim Burton is my favourite diector.. Tim has diected yet other "MASTERPIECE"...he's been a fan of Sondheim boardway musical, he's waited to direct his own and he has done an incredible job and pulled it of perfetly..and now officially the master of dark and delightful...no matter how dark he is... Bravo Tim, Bravo!...

A Burton film vigorously tentacled.Experimental musical, the serious musical Fosse referred to and Sondheim in this case studies it like many others of the 60's era.The scope of Sweeney is vengeance and like any other anti-hero,he is sympathetic (in a dubious way) .Brilliant odor ...( read more)of the London scums, goth underworld, call it whatever suits you.Let it be the opposite of Singin' in the Rain,Dark vs Caramel musicals. The stage version is probably more complete, however it's definitely a grappling feature.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is never a bad match. Helena Bonham does a superb job as well, and the scenes with Sacha Baron Cohen is also vey entertaining. Alan Rickman also does a great job.

Why is it an 18 anyway?

I love this movie too see the truth and besides enjoying the barber's my boyfriend that I wanted jajaja
  • October 22, 2009
I just have to say that as I was listening to the soundtrack to this movie the other I realized that there is a lot of foreshadowing and writing elements that make this movie amazing.

The music itself carries the movie on strong shoulders. The lyrics and the notes themselves ...( read more)speak louder than the characters, and they are portals into the souls of each character. Watching this movie with the mute on would take all the magic away. This is a movie that doesn't need to be seen but needs to be heard.

Tim Burton has his style, we've all seen it and I admire it. It shows a stability and a trademark, it makes his work easier to spot in a crowd of sequals and remakes. Tim Burton made each building into a deep dark hole and filled the city with skum, he made the light reflect the characters evil, and their guile. The direction adds to the magic of this piece. Magic doesn't exactly sound right for this film but it is... because this movie is a magical experiance. I loved each character and knew them inside and out.

Johnny Depp, I can never say a bad word about him. He was as magnificant as ever in this movie. For his musical debut this was outrageously amazing. His voice commanded attention, it forced you to listen. His body language was as always a great asset to the film. The emotional range and the facial expressions of this character are beautiful. He's a tourtured man and Depp portrays this character with such depth and pursuassion. The accent was not as great as some of the real English accents in the film, but it was great for an actor.

Helena Bonham Carter did amazingly as always. Her character dripped of love and affections. Carter seemed to understand all the problems of her loving a man such as Sweeney Todd but faced them with a smile and song. She knew what she was doing, that much was clear in each step Carter took. The eyes were more expressive than the words, but each word she sung added to the impression of her joy at her occupation, or at least what her occupation becomes.

Alan Rickman isn't a great singer, and he's never been my favorite actor, and in this role he doesn't stick out. His performance is an asset, but a small one. He was perfect for the role, but he isn't.... he just doesn't fit, his essence is dimmer.

Laura Michelle Kelly was fabulous. Her singing (small as it may have been) added to the depression and the crazied expressions.

Timothy Spall had a great performance, acting like a rat, a suck-up, it was a perfect choice to choose him.

Jamie Campbell Bower has a brilliant voice and has such a murderous face. His emotions are dramaticly visible on his face. Each step is one of madness and chaos, but it's controlled, you don't know what his character will do. There is such an excitment about the unpredictability of the character.

Ed Sanders also has a outstanding voice, especially for such a young person. His acting was a definate help to this film, he almost stole Helena Bonham Carter's spot-light several times, and he definatly stole the ending.

Jayne Wisener, only sang once, but I had to rewind it to hear it again and again because the pureness in her voice is radiant. It's like an angel's voice has wafted down from the heavens. Her face and her air is such a loving, gentle feeling yet she has a fire yearning to spread its wings and fly. She is a lovely actress.

Sacha Baron Cohen was amazing as he always is. He was funny but did it more tastefully than he has done in the past. His voice is unimaginably greater than he lets on. You would never know he had such a talent when watching him as "Borat" or "Bruno"

    OVERALL A STUPENDOUS MOVIE

Well i'll leave it as it is, Sweeney Todd is a good movie. A masterpiece ? maybe.....just not for me. As a musician I dare stating that all songs could have been crafted better for the movie. I fully understand that the musicals are the most difficult movies to produce. It's not...( read more) that Burton did not achieve his goal, but on the contrary there's nothing wrong about Todd, but I stand by my words that it didn't inspire me as a masterpiece. What was extremely good is definitely the acting, from Depp to Carter to Rickman, even Cohen was good. I guess i'll give it another view soon, because all musicals deserve multiple viewings. I don't recall of any other horror musical (I may be wrong), so thumbs up for Burton for creating something new.
