Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean, Swept Away is Lina Wertmüller's controversial film about sex, love, politics and role reversal. Raffaella, a rich and stunning capitalist, particularly enjoys tormenting Gennarino, a Communist deckhand who works on her husband's yacht. Stranded on a deserted island, Gennarino reverses roles and becomes master over Raffaella. She finds herself submitting to her new role culminating in a dramatic climax when they are rescued and must determine if their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.

No, *not* the Madonna version, but the original strong, powerful Italian version from 1975 with one of the longest titles: "Swept Away... by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August."

Not the greatest, but its very hot and like afterwards I was speaking italian all the time. The people aren't that attractive either... it's the 70's what can I say?

i love this movie. its interesting and romantic and also about politics. dont think too hard about this movie though. a lot of people today wont like it becaues the guy is sort of dominating the woman. i think it makes sense in the movie though. you have to talk about this movie after you watch it.

This film is barely a 3.5... it borders so close to mediocrity, and sometimes to bad that I'm really conflicted on the rating. Some of the moments elevate it, they are small, beautiful and far between. A lot of it is just good, and some of it is godawful. A working class Northerner and bourgeois Southerner get stranded on a desert island where they find love.

I think the major problem of this film is it's attempt to make itself so very political. The charge arguments and disrespect of the beginning are real enough, but at the same time they don't work onscreen. It's overwhelming and when in film, every word, moment and expression means something subconsciously to the viewer it is not only too much information and opinion to handle, but it is gratingly over the top. Opposites attract, but this film goes to extremes that are ridiculous and beyond heavy handed. The only thing that links the two protaganists (or antaganists, you choose) are the beautiful green eyes they share. Too much of the film is politics, not enough of it is humanity, cruelty and love. It makes the parts that are worthwhile and well done almost jaded by the overstimulating past and beginnings. The anti-feminist slant irks me too, but those kind of politics rarely get into why I don't enjoy a film.

As I said though, this film is not a complete and utter failure... some of it is truly excellent. Most of the cinematography is spot on, absolutely gorgeous. Especially the last act and final scene, they are just so well done. On the other hand some of it is soap-opera quality... but that's only part of it. Despite the rather heavy handed material I think both leads do quite a good job, especially Giannini who has some much expression in his eyes. Overall, the second half of the film is a great improvement over the first. And the entire thing is quite compelling, usually if I truly dislike a film I stop watching, it probably will grab you in one manner or another.

I couldn't honestly recommend this film, it's not particularly good but I think some people will find something in it I missed and truly enjoy it.
