Living alone in a New York apartment, Sybil is tormented by flashbacks and visions of her extremely painful childhood. Unable to live a normal life, she meets Dr. Cornelia Wilbur (Joanne Woodward), a kindhearted psychiatrist who becomes committed to helping Sybil heal the incredible wounds that haunt her. Desperate to make Sybil understand her illness, Dr. Wilbur begins a series of treatments and uncovers the 16 personalities that make up the fractured personalities of Sybil. Forced to face unspeakable torture at the hands of her mother (Jane Hoffman), Sybil is slowly able to heal her inner self with the support, guidance, and love of Dr. Wilbur. The incredible 11-year odyssey of these two brave women is brought to the screen with powerful and deeply moving performances by Field and Woodward. Together they portray a deeply touching and inspiring true story of love and determination conquering pain and isolation.

"What the hell did that monster do to you? "

I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time. I'm so glad that I've seen it.

Sybil is a tragic story of a girl that develops multiple personalities to cope with her past.

Sallly Field gives 110% on her performance. It'...( read more)s pure magic the way she acts.

Sally Field is unforgettable as the titular victim of incessant child abuse, a woman who dissolved into thirteen separate and distinct personalities in order to cope with a mother who inflicted indescribable childhood tortures. She is nothing short of amazing, especially in her "...( read more)dissociative" scenes as she morphs with lightning speed into one or more of her "inner family" -- a combative, self-assertive Peggy Lou, a mothering but suicidal Mary, a vivacious, ambitious Vicky, a frightened, thumb-sucking Sybil Ann, or even an athletically-inclined Mike. All of them personalities created and programmed unconsciously by Sybil to endure any situation she herself couldn't handle, and triggered by almost anything -- a hostile argument, piano music, certain colors, street sounds, even a word. The abuse sequences themselves are downright shocking, and the woman who plays the unlucky role of Mamma is quite convincing, but perhaps a bit more about this character's background might've answered some of our own questions. Nevertheless, powerful and enlightening and terrifying--one of the best TV movies ever made.

This is the FREAKIEST movie I have EVER seen!!! Seriously, it will scare the shit out of you while making you realize just how awful child abuse is, and how it affects the rest of one's life.

Sybil is a notable psychological thriller based upon the true-life story of Sybil Dorset (not a real name but indeed a real person). Ms. Dorset suffered from unspeakable horrific treatment from her mother, which subsequently led to her developing sixteen different personalities....( read more) This film is most remarkable for the outstandingly brilliant performance of Sally Field as Sybil. Joanne Woodard is equally brilliant in her role as the psychologist who treats Sybil. This was a 1976 'made for TV' movie, yet it is still probably the most chilling portrait of evil ever shown on broadcast television. This riveting and disturbing look at child abuse will surround you with hope, yet sadden you as well. If the movie moves you, you will also want to read the factual accounting in the book 'Sybil' by Flora Rheta Schreiber. (Be sure to watch the movie on the 2 disc special edition DVD.)

Crazy long but necessary to convey the controversial life of Sybil (Field). I'd recommend it if you have an extra 3hrs to watch an outstanding movie on one intense schizo story.
