Amanda Bynes, Sara Paxton, Matt Long

In a college comedy that puts a modern-day twist on an age-old story, Sydney White tells the tale of a tomboy freshman who ditches her conniving sorority sisters and finds a new home with a group of v...( read more  read more... )ery dorky outcasts. Fed up with the way they’ve all been treated, she’s off to war against the reigning campus royalty. Gorgeous freshman Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) has come to Southern Atlantic University to pledge her late mom’s once-dignified sorority. But while surviving the pledging process wrought by evil campus witch Rachel (Sara Paxton), Syd finds out this version of sisterhood isn’t remotely what it’s cracked up to be. Banished to a condemned house on Greek Row, Syd finds her rightful place with a band of seven very socially challenged guys. With the help of one lovestruck frat boy named Tyler (Matt Long), she and the doofs campaign to take over student government. Fighting for the rights of misfits big and small, Syd organizes her gang to revolutionize the system, once and for all. In a biting new comic film for the nerd in us all, Amanda Bynes brings her trademark style of comedy to the story of a plumber’s daughter who builds an army of dorks done wrong: Sydney White.

The movie "Sydney White" is a pretty good version of the tomboy-not-fitting-in-but-is-an-outstanding-person movie. After being kicked out of her sorority, Sydney takes up with seven losers - ala Snow White and the seven dwarfs. Of course in this fairy tale, Sydney defeats the s...( read more)narky witch and everybody goes home feeling happy.

Typical tween college comedy where the big lesson is to be yourself and accept others. Clichéd characters and predictable situations ensue. Luckily the Snow White twists add some harmless fun and the good nature makes it a very good family film. The real success lies in the cast...( read more)ing of the 7 dorks. Real comedic talents have been chosen and these are comedic talents with acting chops. Sam Levine really shines and it's good to know he will get some extreme exposure in Tarantino's Inglourios Basterds. Bynes is her usual awkward, bubbly self. The film has funny moments, lines and has an excellent dynamic between cast members.

Tell me if this sounds familiar. A kind-hearted outsider comes to a college or high school and leads a group of misfits to victory over the stuck-up, popular kids. This is the exact plot of tons of movies, including Sydney White.

The writers of the movie tried to add some uniqu...( read more)eness to the movie by adding in a few references to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but beyond a few last names, this isn't very noticeable. It certainly doesn't make up for the fact that most of the jokes fall flat.

Your enjoyment of Sydney White will probably depend directly on how much you like Amanda Bynes. I think that she is a lovely young lady and usually very funny, but this film feels like a step backwards after the much funnier She's the Man. Maybe it's time for Amanda to try out a few different kinds of roles until a comedy that truly lets her shine comes along.

I watched this movie because I liked "Revenge of the Nerds" and heard it was similar. It wasn't nearly as funny!

the modern story of snow white
  • November 3, 2009
    very very standard and boring

BOTTOM LINE: "Snow White," except more vapid and stupid.

"Sydney White" is one lackadaisacal piece of trash. How in the hell do you screw up "Snow White?" I don't know, but Chad Gomez Creasey and Joe Nussbaum do. They take this approach: Snow is now Sydney, the evil stepmot...( read more)her is now the evil president of a sorority, the magic mirror is not a website, and heigh-ho is not hos in high heels. Sound dumb? That's because it is. Let's delve into the rest of this idiocy.

The annoying Amanda Bynes is Sydney, a young woman who works on her father's construction crew (since that's what all daughters do). Pretty soon, she'll be off to college to try to fill her dead mother's shoes and become the newest sister of a sorority called Kappa Phi Nu. What she doesn't realize is that the evil stepmother of this tale, Rachel Witchburn (how clever), played horrendously by Sara Paxton, will do anything to have her way. When Sydney is booted from the sorority, she is taken in by seven 'dorks' (how clever) and decides to take a stand against Kappa Phi Nu and hopefully capture the heart of her prince, Tyler Prince (how clever), played by Matt Long, along the way. That's it. That's the movie.

Now, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" is certainly predictable if it's your first time watching it (100% so if it's your second), as is "Sydney White," but instead of that feeling of enchantment I had with "Snow," I feel that, with "Sydney," I'm taking a bite out of a poisoned apple.

The movie is plagued with flaws. There are dumbass explanations for each of the 'dorks'. "Sneezy" is now a guy with allergy problems, "Grumpy" writes mean blogs, etc. I rolled my eyes each time these explanations occured. I have yet to see a sorority sister as vile as Rachel Witchburn and I probably will not in my lifetime. If I meet her, I'll bump my score up another half a star. The movie only gets worse when it actually starts believing in what it's trying to sell, which I ain't buying. Any college theatre student could do a better job playing Sydney than Bynes does. She overacts every step of the way. The best performance comes from Long, who would be quite good backed by a decent script. Alas, this is not that script. I was ready to throw my TV out the window by the time the movie was over. Once upon a time, Buddy Acker saw "Sydney White." He said, "Heck nah." He lived happily ever after.

    Critics who agree:
Claudia Puig, USA Today: "Each twist and turn is so telegraphed and expected that the story feels wan and the comedy feeble."
Score: 2 stars (out of four)
Why I agree: I guessed perfectly where every scene was going every time.

Ty Burr, Boston Globe: "Sydney White makes "Mean Girls" look like Shakespeare."
    Score: 38 (out of 100)
Why I agree: I don't really have a reason to agree other than to say that I laughed like hell at that description.

"Power to the 7th Power" If you followed to the own beat of your drum and were never popular with others in school.. than U are a "DORK" and this film is for you. I def can relate to this film when growing up as a kid and taking it into perspective as an adult. This film is a new twist on a classic tale of "Snow White". For what you take this film to be worth makes it that more enjoyable. I would have to say though that I was a little disappointed in Amanda Bynes as she wasn't the strongest in her role. Also the fact that it reminded me of her acting in "She's The Man" a lot. Sara Paxton played an "Evil Bitch Queen" really well and Matt Long was def the "handsome prince charming". I loved the spin of the "Poison Apple" part and every dork character was memorable. The film also had a great message to "Just Be A Dork" and except everyone for who they are. 3 stars
