Absolutely dreadful, pretentious, nonsensical drivel. Maybe I didn't "get" its commentary on how Chinese culture was shaped throughout history (as I read it was about somewhere), but if that was what it was about, I think it was done hideously.

I tried, I honestly tried to give ...( read more)this one a chance, and goodness knows I love three-parter movies because if just one part is great it may redeem the whole movie. But I watched and watched and absolutely nothing became clear, the acting and script were ridiculous and said absolutely nothing, and it wasn't even visually stimulating to boot.

I'd like to hear if anybody understood what was going on, and if you know me, I'm not one who's always clamouring for story or plot, but I was really struggling to figure out what the heck this movie was about, and why I should care about any of the silly, underdeveloped, shallow characters who seemed to do nothing but delight in uttering nonsensical phrases and prance around crazily.

Perhaps the only thing which could redeem this film is its lilting score, which is quite charming in places but is hardly enough to lift it above its ridiculousness. Pity, because this is quite the cast here, but they're all wasted, especially Joan Chen's horrific giggling doctor. Ugh.

Horrible, horrible movie. If I had five thumbs I would turn them all down. It's been a while since I gave such a low rating to any movie, but I think this one deserves it.

Jiang Wen is definately one of the most art house director from China, no wonder he's well-known to many European directors. The Sun Also Rises had beautiful cinematography. The story might seem hard to understand at first with it's simple but non-logical story-telling way. But e...( read more)verything is connected(at least that's how I see it.) One thing I love about Jiang Wen's work is that he likes to use his strange artistic vision(which is hard to be accepted to Chinese audiences yet) to tell stories with a rich Chinese historical background. Great performances were shown, and I was impressed with Jaycee Chan as well.

This is the first time i watched Wen Jiang's film, so far so good, quite special about the plot and editing skill, and Hisaishi Joe 's music is wonderful all along the time, maybe better focus on the music and sound in this movie.

A really fascinating film, quirky and yet very intriguing. A lot of the stories are genuinely just tales of love, very different types of love, husband and wife, a mother and child and another different husband and wife, one of them is both wife and mother and we see basically a ...( read more)criss-cross series of events, where a women finds another and then something happens in another. It was very startling after a while and you sort of realize a lot as the non-linear story just goes forward, with the shot being a powerful element in narrative and character development.
