Sure there were films dealing with domestic violence, but this one was so intense. This is something that had been happening quite often everywhere, in every country. And this movie was shot to make people aware for this issue and to talk about it. It is the story of a jealous hu...( read more)sband, full of complex of inferiority, terrorizing his wife and son.

I loved the love scene between both, where he made her say that she gave all her body to him. It showed perfectly the mental state of the husband who sees his wife as his property.
It is so difficult to break the relationship, specially when there are kids involved. Also the challenges that women had to face when they try to leave. I think this movie is very realistic and the actors did a great job. I highly recommend it.

This film took the top prize at a local film festival here (the same one where I saw "Las Horas del Día") so I was very surprised, having finally seen it, to find it uneven and, considering the competition, unworthy of its award.

It is by no means a bad film. It is, in fact, q...( read more)uite brave: a portrait of an abusive relationship that spends quite a deal of time focusing on the abuser, his insecurities, his fears. It manages to humanize him completely without once making excuses for his brutal behavior. This is no charicature, but a man who knows he has a problem and seeks help. The problem is that much of the film feels like a PSA announcement. I later found out, in fact, that the film had begun as PSA-ish short and was later expanded to feature length, which makes perfect sense.

Its after-school-special feel is a shame, because a lot of it is incredibly powerful. The character of Antonio is richly developped, and devastatingly played by Luis Tosar, one of the very best actors working in Europe today. The character of Pilar is not nearly as developed, but also well played by Laira Marull. Their relationship is believable, as are their reconcilliations and the scenes of abuse. It is telling that by the end of the film we, paradoxically, want for Pilar to leave, get a better life and be happy and for Antonio to pull through, work out his demons, keep his anger in check and be happy as well. Of course, Antonio is only happy with Pilar, though the opposite is not entirely true.

The direction is somewhat flat, and the writing uneven and preachy, but the performances more than make up for it. This is indeed a good film worth watching, but far from the great work it has been praised as being.

Intense, straightforward account of an abusive, codependent relationship, Incisive without overstressing its points, and emotional without being manipulative. Very well acted.

I thought I had this one figured out from the beginning. Wife fleeing from an abusive husband. Only to take him back. So, what's the ending? Is she dead or is he? Like she says towards the end of the movie. I really don't care what you do. NICE! Good movie, see what happens.

Devoted performances and a very well built script help demolish myths and misunderstandings surrounding domestic violence.

One of the first negative responses the critics give about the Academy Award is how there is only one award for the rest of the world, that is, Best Foreign Film.
I do like Hollywood films and in fact, about 80% of the movies I watch are Hollywood movies. But this time I am goin...( read more)g to write about a Spanish film originally entitled ?Te Doy Hasta Mis Ojos?, which translates into ?Take my Eyes?.
The movie is directed by Iciar Bollaín and stars Luis Tosar as Alfonso and Laia Marull as Pilar.
The movie?s beginning might as well be a suitable ending with, a determined Pilar and her son running away from home to refugee at Pilar?s sister, Ana?s house.
The reason and main theme of the movie are soon revealed, Pilar is beaten by her psychotic husband, Alfonso. We then start understanding the difficult, but yet common, couple relationship they live through.
Pilar and Alfonso both love and need each other, which is the main reason why Pilar returns with him. Unfortunately, there are other factors affecting Alfonso, whom even though is attending an anger management program, has several outbursts of anger.
Being the black sheep of his siblings, being at a work he dislikes, and not liking Pilar?s new job, which is making him insecure of her faithfulness. The truth is Pilar is only enthusiastic about doing something she likes, her husband misunderstand this leading to the mental disturbing final act.
If I had to briefly describe this movie, I will probably say ?Cruelly Real?. An uncomfortable feeling is always present. Making you willing to just stop the movie, but at the same time, gluing you to your seat until its ending.
The characters are really well portrayed and even though you feel no sympathy at all for Alfonso, you still try to comprehend the reasons behind his behavior.
I will like to advice it is a really heavy movie but it is surely recommendable, since this is a problem found in societies all around the world, and this movie portrays what a family under this conditions has to live through.

It wore me out emotionally. An accurate depiction of an abusive relationship. Itll break ur heart.

The actress Laia Marull is very believable as this scared and broken woman..She made me ache for her..She is who I'd never want to be..She was humilated by her husband daily and dealt with it..It reminded me of a woman I knew..She's no longer with that abusive man and she's nolon...( read more)ger the same woman inside..

What makes the movie fascinating is that it doesn't settle for a soap opera resolution to this story, with Pilar as the victim, Antonio as the villain, and evil vanquished. It digs deeper and more pai... full review

This small, somber drama says things to battered women they probably already know. What it says to their abusers -- of any country or culture -- they can't afford to ignore. full review

very deep and meaningful, the pain of love portrayed excellently. the pain, anger, and humiliation that one has to go through in such a situation and the intimacy that can be experienced on a good day... good film.
