Too relentlessly downbeat to entertain most audiences, this post-World War II story is set in Germany where a squad of fatalistic men is working to defuse the many unexploded bombs that are lying around the area. As one defusing sequence after another is played out, deaths do occur when least expected. The two top men, Wirtz (Jeff Chandler) and Koertner (Jack Palance) offer some counterpoint to their work.
