    *Pretentious Bullshit-o-Meter explodes*

It's interesting to think about for a little while before you realize that it means absolutely nothing. Mamoru Oshii has an awesome imagination, though. He just needs to learn how to write. Avalon was a hot mess, and this follows suit.

Whereas Mamoru Oshii's films are usually dense in both plot and ideas, Angel's Egg is almost completely devoid of plot. The director's most personal film, it is almost entirely told through surrealistic images of nature and architecture, twisted through shadow and music to...( read more) convey the way religion--specifically Christianity--eventually reveals itself to be nothing more than false hope and empty promises. The title object, representing hope and innocence, is eventually destroyed by the male character symbolizing Christ, and by extension belief systems as a whole. Due to its highly subjective nature, the film is unique in that it can evoke completely different emotions in the viewer on repeat viewings--watched a certain way, the ending is heartbreakingly tragic, another way, curiously hopeful. The film was made shortly after Oshii, who had trained to become a Christian priest in his youth, lost his faith, and the crumbling religiosity depicted in the film has a personal quality to it that is unforgettable.

    deep, full of religeous messeges

I rate this as a beautiful film where images play up the emotions heavily, where the subtext is both obvious and hidden. I personally found this beautiful, a film in my opinion feels heavily to be talking about religion and modernity and acceptance and loss all at the same time i...( read more)n a little over an hour.

"Angel's Egg" is a rather static anime with about enough substance for a twelve-minute short. What it lacks in story, it fails to make up for with more than mildly inventive imagery, and it ends up looking like a Japanese art school student's effort to emulate Rene Laloux's much ...( read more)superior "La Planete Sauvage".

Slow, quiet, surreal, and inexplicably sad, too. Quite the collaboration between Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano. Beautiful.

Hm... the famous 'Angel's Egg.' Mamoru Oshii directing and Yoshitaka Amano's character design. I don't know why I haven't seen it yet.

    Compliquer mais cool

The film that lifts part of this is much better. - In the aftermarth angels never sleep

The perfect movie. Slow, surreal, layered with meaning and possibly meaningless. Emotional and heartless, profound and horribly simplistic. Oshii's little mystery box is a present never unwrapped.
