    eh

I had read a handful of reviews prior to seeing this one so I was mentally prepared for a major suckfest. It's not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. Maybe that's the key - low expectations!

    ''I'm back.''

John Connor is now in his 20's, and a female terminator, called T-X or Terminatrix, is after him. Another T-101 is sent back through time to protect John once again on the verge of the rise of the machines.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger: Terminator

The fir...( read more)st two films in this franchise really set the franchise in immortal stone, the first a low budget cult classic, and the second an overblown but ultimately superb blockbuster action movie. But T-3 is a flawed project. First and foremost there was no James Cameron, meaning Jonathan Mostow got the job instead.

The Terminator is completely straight-edged and T-2 for all the one liners is serious when it needs to be. T-3 is however a different story. From the moment the TX's chest expands it feels silly, at times a little gratuitous. What I liked about the original and it's sequel was how cold and efficient the Terminators were when it came to the killing. In T-3 the deaths are over the top and pointlessly visceral. Why would the TX choose to carve a victim to death rather than just shoot or stab them? Surely that would save valuable time and attract less attention? For me the TX is a real shame in this picture. A female Terminator could have been poignantly chilling, potentially more terrifying than Arnie or Robert Patrick combines. But for some reason it just doesn't work, she's just not cunning, or relentless enough. The T-1000 remains far more intimidating in my book. My other concern is with John Connor. Okay so Ed Furlong was a little annoying in T-2 but at least he had had heart, a spark and initiative. I could perceive him as a leader because he had some BALLS. Nick Stahl just doesn't have any of that. John Connor is too pathetic, too resigned to things to be the hero he'll turn into. I understand maybe Mostow felt he needed to explore Connor a little, but it doesn't work.

    ''You are terminated.''

It's not all bad though, in fact far from it. T-3 has much to revive itself. As you'd expect the special effects are exceptional, and the action fast paced and easy to watch. The chase scenes are not as good as in T-2 but hey, it's hard to climb Everest twice. In particular Claire Danes is great as Caroline Brewster. Her resourcefulness and spirit despite not having a clue what's going on are hugely refreshing when placed aside Nick Stahl's Connor. And of course who can forget Arnie? The big man delivers enough solid display as a character it's hard not to like. Arnie also delivers one of the best lines in the series so far, ''Desire is irrelevant. I am a machine.''
My favourite part of the movie though, is the end. No i'm not being sarcastic. The ending scene at Crystal Peak is inspired, a wonderful ending to the film. Wheras The Terminator and T-2 needed positive endings, T-3 needed the opposite. The notion that John Connor and Caroline Brewster were only meant to survive, not change the course of history is a far better concept than having them stop Skynet again. Obviously it's leading into a sequel, and it's a fine way to do it. The ending to me is the only time the whole film really captures the spirit of the original, in which survival was the only thing that mattered.

T-3 is a worthy film, but it's not a great film like it's predecessors, and as such will always suffer unfavorable comparisons. Viewed objectively at times, it's very entertaining, but it doesn't do the serious stuff as well as The Terminator or the action sequences as well as T-2.

''Maybe the future has been written. I don't know; all I know is what the Terminator taught me; never stop fighting. And I never will. The battle has just begun.''

A disappointing cash in that doesn't feel like a proper continuation due to the different cast.

Twelve years after the destruction of Cyberdine and the end of Judgment Day John Connor is attacked yet again in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, a lackluster sequel to the two great films by James Cameron. In this third installment John Connor (Nick Stahl) is living of the gr...( read more)id, keeping no profile just in case there's another attack on his life, which ends up occurring. A new killing machine called the Terminatrix (Kristanna Loken) is sent back to the past to eliminate Connor's lieutenants, all of whom are in the late teens and early twenties. One of them is Kate Brewster (Claire Danes) who just happens to have John Connor locked away after catching him stealing medicine from the vet clinic where she works. The film basically turns into the pair being protected by another version of the original Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) as they are pursued by the Terminatrix. Judgement Day was not eliminated, just postponed.

T3 is a decent action film, but it fails as a follow-up to the original two films. The only reason that can be pinpointed is the lack of James Cameron's involvement in the film with him stating that the story was told in the first two films. Whereas the original two films made it seem as the future is not set, this film makes it seem as though the future can only be delayed- what is destined to happen will happen which destroys much of what the first two films were about.

The story is ok, with the basic premise being updated for today's technology. The acting is also ok. That's about all I can say. This is your standard action picture that tries to one up the previous installments but fails to have much of a heart in the end. I've seen worse action films, but I've also seen better, too.

It's a not bad for a third movie, but director Jonathan Mostow cant follow in James Cameron's footsteps.

Disappointing 2nd sequel. They should have left it just as they were with 2 movies. Plenty of good action sequences though.

"The future has not been written. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves. I wish I could believe that. My name is John Connor, they tried to murder me before I was born, when I was 13 they tried again. Machines from the future. Terminators. All my life my mother told ...( read more)me the storm was coming, Judgment Day, the beginning of the war between man and machines. Three billion lives would vanish in an instant, and I would lead what was left of the human race to ultimate victory. It hasn't happened, no bombs fell, computers didn't take control, we stopped Judgment Day. I should feel safe, but I don't, so I live off the grid - no phone, no address, no one and nothing can find me. I've erased all connections to the past, but as hard as I try I can't erase my dreams, my nightmares. I feel the weight of the world bearing down on me. A future I don't want. So I keep running as fast as I can... anywhere... nowhere." - John Connor

A good sci-fi/action film, but it lacks the substance of the first two Terminator films.

John Connor is a man in his twenties, moving around from place to place, and never feeling entirely safe as he knows that someday a Terminator may come after him again. Little does John know that on this day, a powerful Terminator known as the Terminatrix or T-X has been sent back in time to terminate future Human Resistance lieutenants and possibly John Connor himself, if he can located. To combat this threat, the Human Resistance of the future sends back a T-850 model to primarily protect Katherine Brewster, John Connor's future wife, and if possible, John Connor as well. John Connor survives a car accident and heads to an animal hospital in hopes of finding medicine. It is here where he meets Katherine Brewster and the T-X as well. Out of nowhere, the T-850 arrives in time to fight the T-X and allow the two humans to escape. The T-850 temporarily wins the fight and explains to John Connor and Katherine Brewster that it is his mission to protect them and that they must leave the area they are in now, Los Angeles, and seek shelter from the nuclear attack that is going to begin on this day, Judgment Day. John Connor disagrees with this as he states cyberdyne was destroyed by him and his mother the last time a terminator was sent back in time to kill him. The T-850 states that he only postponed it, Judgment Day is inevitable.

The King of the World, James Cameron, decided not to direct this film and the torch has been passed on to Jonathon Mostow who isn't a bad action film director. This film has some very good action scenes but is missing the interaction and deeper storyline that Terminator 1 and 2 had.

Returning as The Terminator or T-850 model 101 is Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's a joy to see Arnold in a third Terminator film and he proves yet again that he owns this role. The Terminator from T-1 and T-2 was a big pop culture icon back in the day when the films were released. In this film, The Terminator just didn't have the same effect or dazzle as its predecessors. Some scenes are more of a parody when they should be something bad ass. For instance, when The Terminator is looking for clothes, he goes to a redneck bar where it is ladies night. He is butt naked and goes up to the stage and takes the clothes away from a gay dancer. Meanwhile there is "Macho Man" playing in the background and the women are screaming like nuts. The Terminator does get his signature black leather outfit and does find a pair of black sunglasses to complete the get-up. Aside from scenarios like that, The Terminator does sport lots of weaponry and when he wields the big fucking guns, he is awesome. Other than this film being just the third part of the series with good special effects, Arnold is a major reason to watch this film.

Nick Stahl is John Connor who over the years hasn't developed into the character that fans would have expected. Between T-1 and T-2 it was clear that Sarah Connor had changed over the years into a fearsome warrior who is both physically and mentally tough. The same has not happened for her son, who is not the big, strong, military genius of the Human Resistance. Stahl doesn't do a terrible job as John Connor, but it would have been nice to see a better performance for a character that is so pivotal in the Terminator series.

Claire Danes is Katherine Brewster. She is the daughter of Lieutenant General Robert Brewster of the USAF and the man basically in charge of the Skynet project but under the name of Cyber Research Systems division. It is also revealed that Katherine is the future wife of John Connor and mother of his children. Danes is filling in the role of Sarah Connor, as Linda Hamilton turned down being in this film. Danes screams and whimpers a lot, and her dialogue isn't that good. Her character does come together by the end of the film, which is where this film does shine with all of its main characters.

Kristanna Loken is the Terminatrix or T-X. The T-X is a superior model to the T-850 as it can mimic anything it touches of equal size (similar to the T-1000), control other machines, and has its own array of technologically advanced weaponry courtesy of Skynet. The T-X's biggest and fatal flaw is that it is not Arnold and therefore can not win. The biggest difference with this terminator from past films is that it is female. It appears that the developers of this movie wanted to give fanboys and horny people out there some reason to go see this film as this terminator has sex appeal. While it does do that as Loken is hot but her character does not have the same cultural affect that the T-1000 or Arnold has had. The T-X does have a limited range of emotion but it is just not cool to see. The exoskeleton of the T-X is nicely done but not as awesome as the endoskeleton of Arnold. There should have been more work done on this terminator model.

The soundtrack of this film is good and the signature Terminator theme can be heard, but it is not as well done as Terminator 2. In the special effects department, this film does very well. The big truck chase is highly explosive but not up to par with the scene from Terminator 2. There are some areas where the CGI falters and you can notice where not as much time and skill was put into those scenes. The flash-forward scene to the future at the beginning of the film works very well and there seems to be an unending amount of human skulls on the ground. The machines are laying waste to everything and it concludes with a T-101 staring directly at you. The end of the film showcases numerous nuclear explosions that go along with John Connor's realization that he could not stop Judgment or destroy Skynet as there was no system core. Skynet had infected all electronic systems whether it be computers, internet, telephones, military systems, etc. It was in cyber space and the only choice left was to ride out the storm and rise from the ashes.

This film leaves much to be desired but it delivers the good action scenes, the story of how the machines rise, a good ending, and Arnold Schwarzenegger doing what he does best. Some people say this is one of the worst "threequels" or third film in a series, while other people say it is one of the best "threequels" out there. Personally, I enjoyed very much as it was the first and only time to date I have seen Arnold on the big screen. This film does place in my book as one of the best threequels because of the reasons I have listed here. The bottom line is that you should watch this film is you are an action, sci-fi, or Arnold fan and make your decision on this one yourself.

"By the time Skynet became self-aware it had spread into millions of computer servers across the planet. Ordinary computers in office buildings, dorm rooms; everywhere. It was software; in cyberspace. There was no system core; it could not be shutdown. The attack began at 6:18 PM, just as he said it would. Judgment Day, the day the human race was almost destroyed by the weapons they'd built to protect themselves. I should have realized it was never our destiny to stop Judgment Day, it was merely to survive it, together. The Terminator knew; he tried to tell us, but I didn't want to hear it. Maybe the future has been written. I don't know; all I know is what the Terminator taught me; never stop fighting. And I never will. The battle has just begun." - John Connor

The four main characters of this movie were cast wrong. But the ending was glorious.
