Plot: In 1974, Inoshiro Honda, the original and best Godzilla director, returned after a five-year absence to direct this 20th-anniversary commemoration to Gojira (the original Japanese name for Godzilla, b...( read more read more... )efore the West Anglicized it). This is the fifteenth film in the Godzilla series, and the eleventh by director Honda. Yet again the aliens (from the third planet of the black hole, whatever that means; they don't really provide directions) stage a takeover of Earth, this time with the aid of Mechagodzilla and Titanosaurus (they're just what they sound like). They owe the mad scientist Mafuni for the use of Titanosaurus, who in turn owes the aliens for resurrecting his daughter, Katsura, badly hurt in an accident, albeit now as a cyborg with the ability to control their two mecha-monsters. It shapes up as the fight of the century when Godzilla is pressed into service for our side. The battling behemoths afford the most dramatic and vivid fight scenes in all of Godzilladom in this one. Let's hope the aliens don't win; they're so smug. --Jim Gay

A great villain always deserves a second appearance and Toho studios knows that as well as anybody. So a year after GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA, Toho brought the cybernetic doppelganger of its main monster star back to the screen. This time around, they also brought back composer Akira Ifukube and director Ishiro Honda--in his final directorial effort in the series. The tone this time is quite a bit darker than previous entries but it's still just a lot of fun. The Godzilla suit has been hardened a bit, thankfully, though it still looks a bit like Smokey the Bear. The new monster, Titanosaurus, is a memorable and entertaining creation. The direction is a bit uneven at times, but overall it's very well-done. Any Godzilla fan should have a terrific time watching this. Thanks to Classic Media it's now available uncut, the way it was meant to be seen. Just be aware that the original Japanese version contains nudity and thus is probably not suitable for younger viewers.

The human drama is thought out but slow. Despite the more grim tone, Godzilla is once again made out into a child-friendly hero.

I love how MechaGodzilla spends half the movie flying back and forth. And that rightously angry pilot lol. Luckily there's some aliens to keep Godzilla busy while MechaG finds out what he wants...

Titannosaurus. Awesome. Freakin'. Monster. Good flick all around, and the last one for almost ten years.

the movie was totally awsome. They got Gojira perfectly in this one. And mechagodzilla is the biggest and coolest man-made destroying machine powered by a chick i've ever seen

I'm not even gonna rate it. It's just that bad. But growing up I died to see it, so my Dad gave it to me as a finishing the (I think) 10th grade present. That taught me to pine after material goods...
