In Gothenburg, Sweden, leaders of the European Union gathered for an annual summit in the summer of 2001 and were met by thousands of anti-globalization protesters. In the melee that followed, property was damaged, businesses were looted, and the aggressive police force brought in to control the crowd wounded two young demonstrators, one critically.
