It doesn't really achieve what it sets out to do. The beginning was supposed to explain why the family descended into their horrific madness. This is just another bog standard chapter in a franchise that's past it. Nice cinematography, OK acting, plenty of gore but unnecessary an...( read more)d unsubtle. I know it?s a horror but this film is too violent and shares none of the real terror of the original.

    "Witness The Birth Of Fear"

    REVIEW

A pointless film that presents an unnecessary and trite "beginning" story of one of horror's most infamous monsters, Leatherface and his cannibalistic clan. The reason they are cannibals: they can't afford food? Come on, what about that cow the kids hit? In all fairness though is any reason for cannibalism in this film's world a real good reason? No, but they could've tried harder. This film is also drained of all tension, since it is a prequel and since we know the police don't discover the Hewitt clan's deeds until Aug. 1973 we know that every person we are supposed to root for is going to die.

That said (and believe me I could go on) there are some great moments in the film. The push-up scene is gruesomely delightful in all its manic glee and the scene where we discover why Old Monty has no legs in the first film is one of those classic moments. R. Lee Ermey continues his self-righteous rant that he so perfected in "Full Metal Jacket" (for you who may not know he was in fact a real life Marine Drill Sergeant before that film). And lastly the scene with the Tea Lady is perfectly macabre.

This film was unnecessary and feels forced and completely out of sync with the decent enough for what it was 2003 remake. Last comment, This film is completely devoid of any real timeline connection to the 2003 film though. Supposedly the meat packing plant closed down in 1969, yet at the end of the remake Erin fights Thomas and cuts off his arm in a fully functional meat packing plant in August 1973. I guess it is possible for a new meat packing plant to have been built in that time, but based on the weariness of this film's story, I think it's an oversight.

Aww come on...kill the momentum much!
We liked not knowing the reason or rhyme behind this family of proverbial weirdos, that was the high point, not knowing the why, the what or the how...was it must to kill that, really!?
And even if you must kill off the imagination of us all,...( read more) could you at least have followed through correctly!
I mean seriously! The first 5 minutes of the film shows us how he's born (isn't the miracle of birth grand), and then 2 minutes after he's a grown man...
    Are you kidding me >.<

More gore from Leatherface n the Hewitt family, typical Texas mayhem but great insight into why leatherface is the sick twisted killer he is.
