Flanked by the charismatic Aaron Eckhardt, Thank You for Smoking lays bare the culture of spin that pervades modern society. With the scene-stealing Eckhardt, ultra-snappy dialogue and a fiercely satirical edge, the film has much to recommend it. The overall story isn't strong enough to make it a set-in-stone classic, but it is relevant, palatable and extremely entertaining, something not many films can lay claim to.
loooved this movie! it had a surprising amount of wit and dry humor, the kind of stuff that's really hard to use sometimes in movies because movie goers aren't too fond of it. but anyway, Eckhart esd great in this movie: he plays the perfect smoothe talking businessman, which makes me excited for the Dark Knight, where he plays Harvey Dent. anyway, this movie had a great story, amazing acting and was really hilarious. loved it.
This was just so great! I would love to tell you more about it, but the only thing I can really say that will make a difference is, that you should go rent it, bring it home, put it on, turn on the screen and watch it. I brings with it, many different emotions and you'll thank me for watching it when you'r done ;)
I know it's a bad example for kids, but if u r a business persone, u'll know this guy Aaron Eckhart was the best in deffending his company, and thats take you to the top of the business world!
Can the synopsis be better! different and without a cheesy moralising ending. The main character is lovely and the cast is perfect. alot better than I expected! Black jokes when they are at their best.
Even after seeing all the positive reviews, I didn't quite expect it to be this good. Infact it's one of the best comedies I've seen lately. The director totally ditches the idea of making a politically correct film and it's quite brave of him I guess. It's not only really funny at times but quite witty as well while at the same time providing all of us with an insight into how it works, on both sides of the argument. It does have kind of a documentary aspect to it I guess. So it's like a documentary with drama and comedy, and it's totally amusing and fun to watch.
Brad: Nick, your job and everything aside, I hope you understand that second hand smoke's a real killer. Nick Naylor: What are you talking about? Brad: I just hope you're providing a smoke-free environment for Joey is all I'm saying. Nick Naylor: Brad, I'm his *father*. You're the guy fucking his mom.
Em clima de documentário e comédia consegue passar muito bem a mensagem sem pressionar, conscientizando sem ser de forma arbitraria.É um filme muito divertido, com um ritmo na velocidade certa e inteligente.
Nick Naylor is possibly the most hated man in America; his job is basically to peddle poison to children. But it pays the mortgage...This extremely clever and insightful satire of today's climate of political spin is incredibly sharply written and has lots of laugh out loud moments as it deconstructs the methods used by PR men in the 21st century; even the "good guys" do not emerge unscathed as they are shown to use exactly the same tactics (see the hilarious scene when William H. Macy bemoans the quality of his TV "cancer kid"!). It may not have the flash and bangs of Lord Of War, but it has far more depth; in fact it reminded me more of an updated version of American Psycho. Instead of the hands on greed of the 80s satirised in that film, it shows how the immoral earn their corporate cash through hypocrisy and double talk these days rather than getting their "hands dirty". I couldn't help feeling that Jason Reitman got more carried away with making a political point and smart dialogue than dramatic momentum and so the plot lacked focus, but the cast are all superb and it contains witty and stylish visual and voice over cues in a similar vein to Fight Club and a great soundtrack. Very funny, very clever.
oh, wickedly funny. and every time the scene changed, some new and fascinating character. good points, too. i'm against smoking, and i enjoyed this film!
Not perfect by any means, had me laughing the whole time...twice? Yes. Spectacularly driven comedy. Were social points made? Eh. Were social points somewhere roaming around the recesses of my mind playing with lobbyist subject matter? Yeah, something. Who cares. It's fun.
A terrific, true, appealing and hilarious social commentary featuring the smoking companies, campaigns and enterprises as the central topic. Aaron Eckhart was absolutely great, and the film has a cool cast overall. highly recommended viewing.
A movie about responsibility and making choices and manipulation. Aaron Eckhart's performance was they key to the dark humour. There are several actors who could play him (James Spader, Christian Bale...) but I'm glad they went with Eckhart because he was just brilliant.
Warning: This film may cause you to laugh at things you feel you shouldn't, but it's not detrimental to your health in any way, shape, or form.
What we've got here is a valentine to everything that's bad about American government and the joys of political correctness. It works too!
... a movie that's definitely smokin'. In more ways than one.
Nick Naylor: "Michael Jordan plays ball. Charles Manson kills people. I talk. Everyone has a talent."
Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) has one of the most hated jobs on the planet. He is a tobacco lobbyist in Washington and makes his fortune out-talking people on the benefits of smoking. He is deceptive, manipulative and worst of all, incredible at his job. It is this sense of satisfaction that keeps Nick coming back to work every day, despite the occasional pangs of guilt that plague his conscious. He is also trying to bridge a relationship with his estranged son, and his desire to be a solid role model begins to weight heavily on his shoulders. Nick heads out with his fellow lobbyists from the alcohol and firearm industries and drink themselves silly nightly, arguing over whose products kill more people. Nick comes up with a plan to re-glamorize smoking to the youth market by paying movie studios to feature actors and actresses prominently smoking cigarettes in major films, like in the 1930s, and heads off to Hollywood to strike a deal. Meanwhile, an ambitious reporter (Katie Holmes) has her eyes on Nick in more ways than one. While Nick heads for a dramatic showdown with a Democratic Senator on the health hazards of smoking (William H. Macy), he receives a curveball for the first time in his profession ? a death threat. The satire is pointed in every which way, which gives the film spontaneity and freshness. Aaron Eckhart is a potent and sympathetic driving force in the lead, whereas other stand-out performances are given by William H. Macy and Rob Lowe. The pure backbone of the film is obviously Naylor, and the spinal cord is Eckhart chewing up the scenery in the guise of this rich character.
for all you that have been putting off seeing this movie, watch it now. this film is unlike any ive seen before. it takes a serious subject , treats it with respect, and is very funny. Eckhart is amazing in this film.
wyatte
Thank You For Smoking was a better movie than I expected it to be, I liked the guy who acted as the main character and found it to be quite entertaining.
" THANK YOU FOR SMOKING IS THE SMARTEST WAY TO CONVINCE US THAT SMOKING IS COOL. "
Before,Me,personally, think that smoking is gross, but what after watching this movie?Guess what, now I think smoking is utterly cool.Yes,Thank You For Smoking is the smartest way to convince us that smoking is cool.Thank You For Smoking is the most hard-hitting satire in a long time, and it will left you with a little more intelegence after watching this movie.Aaron Eckhart is way brilliant for playing this role, funny yet extremely convincing.
You leave the movie experience feelings intelligent. Regardless if you agree with the film's message (which can be interpreted accurately several different ways) it manages to fall back on how damn funny it is.
