I dont usually like comedies like this (slapstick, hollywoodish) But this was actually very enjoyable, Steve Carrell really made the movie, without him and some other members of the cast it wouldnt have been as enjoyable as it was.
It was sweet, funny and predictable; qualities which are great in cheezy comedies like this, no that isnt sarcasm I honestly belive predictability can enhanse certain movie's enjoyability (Predictability can kill certain films, but in romantic comedies its one of the best parts, you wouldnt want the main character to wind up alone and psychologically damaged now would you?)
Anyway, parts of the dialogue were really natural (eg. When two of the characters were talking about 'getting baked') Some of which was probably adlibbed rather than scripted which in itself shows good writing (It doesnt always have to be pre-decided)
The music was funky, the characters were amusing and daft as well as being extreemly likeable, and
Obviously there were moments I didnt laugh at, eg. when Andy (in a flashback) kicks his girlfriend who he almost has a sexual interaction with, right in the face by mistake; I dont really care for such slapstick (Thats just me, Its not fact)
But the dialogue was were the humour really entertained me.
Its a really nice film which caters for both the romance film lovers, the goofy (and wittier) humour fans, and well everyone really.
Sorry just have to mention one more time, Carrell is a bloody legend.
Very people have seen this movie which are the same age as me. I found this really funny. I couldnt stop laughing. After watching it I did have a weird feeling in my stomach which hurt really badly. But it was so worth it. I love the part when he goes and gets his chest waxed. He says the most randomest things ever. In some way I kinda felt sorry for him. But he had to do it. The cast was great. They made me laugh which meant that they did their jobs right. I do recommend you guys to watch this movie. You will be in for a funny night.
Mooj: Hey Andy, don't let him bother you. It's okay not to have sex. Not everybody's a pussy magnet. You, uh, what are you 25? Andy Stitzer: I'm 40. Mooj: Holy shit, man you got to get on that.
From Judd Apatow who has become a key producer for all the frat packer movies, as well as creating cult TV favorites like Freaks and Geeks, comes a comedy where basically he and his friends set up an idea, and then has them all act in it and improv off each other. The results are very funny.
Steve Carrell stars as said virgin, Andy, playing him as a generally likable guy who is just naive to the concept of sex. He works in an electronic store, and after his friends, a group of funny actors which include Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, and Romany Malco, attempt to help him out.
Eventually Andy forms a believable relationship with a woman Trish, played by Catherine Keener, a continues to try and improve upon his status as just a regular guy.
Once again, this is just the setup to the movie which is very funny, crude, vulgar, but kinda sweet. It never sells itself out, its true to its characters and not mean spirited.
Andy Stitzer: Is it true that if you don't USE it you LOSE it? Health Clinic Counselor: Is that a serious question? Andy Stitzer: No, it wasn't.
It also has great one-liners throughout, and is great for repeated viewings. Very Funny.
David: I dated this girl for four months, and it was the best thing in my life! Until she went down on this guy in... an Escalade, I think. Andy Stitzer: Where is she now? David: Oh she's dating some pot dealer which is a stupid horrible decision, but hey - that's her journey. If she wants to be a fucking immature bitch and blow everybody... But that's love, man.
Good writing overall, but some of the jokes just weren't funny (the bit about the horse? What the f!*?). It steers away from the slapstick 'sex ain't natural, it's hilarious' gig, but it still leans dangerously close to falling on it's face, though it never actually does. Steve Carrell is the only reason it really succeeded. I give it a wary thumbs up, though I'm still unsure.
Better than i would have given it credit for, assumed it would be a fil of crass humour, but t=it was enjoyable and dare i say it.. even funny in places.
Funny from the first opening moments until the credits roll. It's a laugh out loud riot and Steve Carell is the ring leader with Paul Rudd,Seth Rogen,Elizabeth Banks and the rest of the cast fleshing out this great comedy
Brilliantly written and an amazing comic performance from Steve Carell, creates a fun and heart filled comedy which would be loved by Apatow comedy fans.
Judd Apatow knows how to make a funny movie, I only wish he would try to use a little bit of restraint with his characters. He always seems to push it a little to far and eventually they all just become perverts.
I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I never thought much of Steve Carell one way or the other before it, but he definitely impressed me with his comedic chops in this one.
This movie will really make you laugh. The type of movie that is funny from start to finish which is hard to pull off in some films. Steve Carell has a talent and it is comedy.
I didn't really like this movie much at all. There were just too many things that realistically would have played out differently, and I know realism is not important in comedy, but this went a bit far afield. Plus I didn't find it all that funny, and I'm not sure the main character's friends were really all that interested in being his friend.
Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell, The Office) is a forty-year-old man who has not had sex. He's built his life around collecting action figures, playing video games, and working as a stock manager at a store that could be your local Circuit City or Best Buy. His coworkers bond together with one mission: land a woman on Andy. They try to get him to take a drunk girl home, or find a hooker. But fortunately for Andy, fate intervenes when the owner of a "We Sell Your Stuff on eBay" store meanders in to buy a VHS machine. Turns out Trish (Catherine Keener, Capote) is a hot grandmother who takes a shine to our hero. Steve Carell does an amazing job as Andy Stitzer, because he walks a fine line between being a character we can laugh at and still care about. You end up rooting for Andy to not only lose his virginity, but lose it in the right way. In the meantime it's hysterical to see him flail through every stupid situation his friends put him in. Yet when Carell has to get real with Catherine Keener, it rings true and sweet. Keener pours some depth in to the movie with her acting chops, and Carell has to rise to the occasion. Paul Rudd (200 Cigarettes), Romany Malco (Death and Texas), and Seth Rogen (Donnie Darko) all quickly capture a unique energy and camaraderie with each other as the employees of the fictional "Smart Tech." The rest of the cast each has moments where they shine as well, thanks to the improvised techniques that allow each comic actor and actress a chance to show us what they've got. Racial jokes, gay punch lines, and all the typical sex jokes get bandied around, but they never seem old hat. The 40 Year Old Virgin is a different kind of comedy, in that it relies entirely on the audience to find the jokes, and doesn?t provide the humor to the characters in the story at the same time it is appealing to the viewers.
Not as good -- or as funny -- as I'd hoped. Possibly because most of my friends had seen it already and really liked it. It's okay, and pretty funny, it just doesn't live up to the "OMG -- it's fan-taaaas-tic!" hype it's been given. But go in expecting to enjoy a decent movie rather than an amazing comic masterpiece? You'll have fun.
funny and cute, i enjoyed it the second time i watched it because my parents weren't watching it with me that time (not a pleasant expirience to watch this movie with your parents for anyone)
i think tht this movie is a discrace to all man kind whoever came up whith this should be ashamed of themselves ! what is wrong with being a virgin? can any one with prinsebuls tell me?
It annoyed me at first, because it's so childish and misogynistic, but Steve Carell's character is really likeable and I stuck with it, and by half way was really enjoying it. A lovely story.
so awesome, you wouldn't believe the amount of laugh out loud moments. Usually i hate sing a longs randomly appearing in films(i'm looking at you billy madison), but what a treat this one was, I love it, so much so i've watched it over and over, great moves rogan and Rudd. Awwh good times, seriously if you're looking for a comedy go fo this one.
